itunes killed my ipod classic

itunes recently killed two classic 160gb ipods I have within a week of each other when the new version of itunes (10?) was released. I received at different times the following errors

"can't connect to drive f:\" error

"the ipod cannot by synched. The desk can not be read or written to" error

"the ipod cannot by synched. An unknown error occured (-124)" error

"the ipod cannot by synched. The required folder cannot be found" error

"disconnect retry cancel" error

My ipod began skipping songs, it would no longer sync and itunes would freeze when the ipods were connected to my computer.

My ipod shows that it is synchronizing when it is not (I had to set it to manual sync to avoid other errors). then itunes doesn't run or respond within windows. I eject the ipod. nothing happens. I have to physically disconnect the ipod without ejecting in itunes to get itunes to run.

I've reset the ipods. I put them in Disk Mode. I've connected them to other computers that have itunes 10. Nothing works. Nothing. I've read every discussion group, loaded every driver. Prayed to every saint.

I use an old itunes version (8.0.2.20) because I prefer it to the newer versions that don't have the Genre Artist Album list categories along the top of itunes. After declining yet another update, my two ipod classic (160 gb) would no longer synchronize, producing the errors above. At the iPod store on Chestnut St in SF, I get a sneer and a shrug, and I am told I can get my (out of warranty) iPods repaired for $179 each + $59 for the one whose battery died when I (tried but failed to) manually load overnight the music I lost.

Apple ate $600 of my products and 60+ hours of my time. May I please just sell them back my classic ipods and buy different MP3 players? Apple is my least favorite consumer company in my history of buying products of any kind.

Has anyone experienced similar synchronization errors using windows or a Lenovo T500 or itunes 8.0.2.20 with classic 160gb ipods? If so, would you please recommend a solution to solving my synchronization problems? Thanks in advance.

One might expect an update to improve compatibility with WIn 10, not destroy it.

You're right, but the fact is that software such as iTunes is very complex. I doubt I could even layout iTunes as a block diagram (explaining iTunes as departments that work together). *(Now there's a challenge for tt2!)*

Concentrate on the issue that you are having. Have you followed the link tt2 offered and if so (when you do), what did you find?

I suspect you've already come across my Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates user tip. It might be worth noting that there has been a rerelease of the current version of iTunes 12.3.2.35. As far as I can tell this addresses an issue with flickering in the iTunes Store that some users have had, but there is always a chance there are other undisclosed fixes. See the Older versionssection for links to recent builds if you want to try rolling back to an older version.

Hi all I also updated my iPod classic 80g this last week when adding new songs ready to play the x-mas party songs. It had been A1 since purchase many years ago this week, freezing, then would not sync, tried restore and now have a blank iPod with nothing showing, is not picked up by Mac or PC so cannot reload music. Put request in for telephone call from Apple Support, they phoned twice and cut me off twice, which can only mean they know its caused a problem (in my opinion. I am going to make face to face appointment and take it all down as other issues with Mac, Phone as well. Starting to think moving over from PC last year may have been an error.

Thanks for your help, Fiend. Note the following from my reply to TT2:

In my case, after the disk checked out fine, 0 retracts and 0 reallocations, I went over to batch transfers of about 250 songs at a time. Problem solved.

That said, three observations:

  • A post on another website taught me to create a playlist in iTunes on my desktop and copy all of my music to the playlist. This does not transfer any 'missing link' entries (as indicated in the!column) to the playlist. I then transferred from that playlist to the main folder on my iPod in smaller batches, which worked without a flaw.
  • This problem WAS a consequence of my updating to the latest version of iTunes. I say that with certainty now because I was able to transfer my entire iTunes folder to the same iPod in one step four separate times using several previous versions of iTunes without incident. First, when my iPod was new, once when I was moving all my Holiday music to my 8 GB Nano, and once after my C: drive crashed on the desktop and was replaced, and once recently when I moved my iTunes folder to a larger hard drive that was not the root drive. Four for Four. But update to the latest version of iTunes and under the new version the bulk transfer fails. (As The Fiend pointed out in this thread, the iPod software had not changed.)
  • I have done enough C++ and JAVA programming to know a software problem when I hit one. This problem is a glitch, not a 'feature'. But {TT2's} work-around worked splendidly.
