Kernel Panic problem - Please please help!!

Hi there,

I've been having issues with this for some time now - Macbook Pro crashing/black screening with the only option being to power off and reboot. My last error Report came up as follows:

I've no idea what the problem is: Previously, I was experiencing crashes when the following 2 entries featured in the crash report:

(a) com.rogueamoeba.hermes

(b) com.Cycling74.driver Soundflower

They were linked to (a) AudioHijack program, and (b) Max 5 (an Ableton live-related program) - so I deleted all the files I could find for each of them, but the report generated still included the above antries - then I re-installed OSX using the install disc that came with my Macbook Pro.

The entries seem to have disappeared, but I'm still getting crashes, especially when I try to open Time Machine. It's driving me mad and I've got work to be getting on with AAARRGH!

If anyone can please help/throw some light on this, it'd be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

TD.

Message was edited by: KingPro By the way, I have a Macbook Pro (mid 2010) - Just installed updates to version 10.6.7 . There is also a WD Passport 500GB ext. hard drive attached (used as time machine), and recently added a WD MyBook 2TB ext. hard drive for storage - both via a Laser 7-port USB hub. Not sure if either of these would come into the equation when considering the frequent crashes, but I thought it might be useful information for those in the know...

Well, has the ASD come out with anything?

If you have the same issue as myself, then they might tell you everything's fine.

Well anyway, I seemed to have found a temporary solution until I see them again on Sunday and demand a fix.

I'm using gfxCardStatus set on integrated graphics, and that at least has seemed to prevent the kernel panics from occuring the past few days (given the logs state it's an nvidia issue). Safari stutters on full screen youtube vids, but it's better than the constant daily crashing.

I'm just trying to think how I can argue that they should give me a repair >:O

May 10, 2011 3:48 PM in response to WhoaTony

I haven't had mine back from the shop yet - it's still in there until the weekend. What I hope they don't do (...and I hope the Apple staff are reading this...) is try and CHARGE me because they say it ISN'T a hardware problem - as far as I'm concerned if my computer isn't working through no fault of my own, they should probably just replace the Logic Board or other parts they deem could be the issue. If it is software/driver related, that is also no fault of my own, and the work should be done under warranty.

They already got my my money be selling me a dodgy laptop...

...next time I'll be getting a top-notch Windows OS.

May 15, 2011 12:52 AM in response to KingPro

Okay, so I'm now back on my Macbook Pro after having had it serviced by the techies - they've replaced the Logic Board straight up- they basically said I probably just got unlucky with my purchace and got a dodgy graphics card or something. Didn't charge me either, so all in all a good result. They even had a look at the kernel panic logs I posted here.

If yours is still under warranty I'd suggest taking it in to the techsperts and see what they say.

Thanks to all those who posted and suggested fixes. Best of luck with your troublesome box of Apple tricks.

Hey KP,

Good to hear man!

Visited the Apple Store for the 4th time today, and the Genius this time round went through a length process with me so that we could get down to the bottom of the issue. He was much nicer than the people I've been dealing with so far.

He couldn't figure out the problem and had to get a second opinion, but again, neither of them could spot the issue. I managed to check it in for a logic board replacement after specifying the following (advice for others):

1) I reinstalled the OS after a clean wipe using disk utility, and DID NOT restore from time machine but instead only copied a few files over.

2) Apple has already performed the extended ASD which reported no issues, hence doing it again would be pointless

3) The issue WOULD occur on a clean reinstall, with absolutely no 3rd party software installed

4) My mates with the same models DO NOT have the issue (stupid that I needed to mention that I know)

5) I saved every single kernel panic log into a seperate folder so that they wouldn't disappear after a certain amount of time (It's impressive how big that folder became)

6) I DID NOT drop or bump the machine in any way

And only then, did I get it checked in. But it's done, and I'm happy 😀

I have the exact same issue!

Please see my post here: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3077239

WhoaTony, thank you for your response. I am starting the document each occurrence is well and will present my findings to the Genius (along with this this post 😉 ).

Okay, well... afteR I REcieved my Macbook on Wedensday, the keRnel panic issue seems to be Resolved.

HoweveR, I have an even moRE unusual pRoblem now...

As you can see, the R key on my keyboaRd has also automatically the shift keystRoke bound to it. This is afteR a OS Reinstall. I'm getting sick and tiRed of all these bloody issues -_-

Just give me a **** new mac and be done with it. I REally don't want to wait ANOTHER week to get one **** key fixed.

FYI, this is as soon as I got my logic boaRd Replaced. I REally should check my machine THOROUGHLY befoRE leaving the Apple StoRE. Not happy 😟

At the veRy least, this issue is easy to demonstRAte. Best wishes to all you guys.

I was also having the NVDAResman panic errors. I found that this seems to have worked for my macbook...

(Borrowed from http://osx86.wikidot.com/known-issues)

com.apple.GeForce; com.apple.NVDAResman Kernel Panic Issue

Issue: System stops on Kernel Panic during boot.
Solution:This is caused by the GeForce Kexts that are installed by default. The issue is resolved by removing the GeForce kexts at boot, and it can be done as followed:

boot with -s
mount -uw /
rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/GeForce.kext
rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/Ge*.kext
rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/NV*kext
exit

Hope this helps all of you.

Just thought I'd add my experience.

mid 2010 MBP i7; OS X 10.6.8

I'm getting the exact same backtraces when this kernel panic blacks my screen and forces me to do a hard reboot.

com.apple.GeForce

com.apple.NVDAResman

com.apple.nvidia.nv50hal

Started happening around the same time as everyone else so I think the suggestion is correct that 10.6.5, or some combination of 10.6.5 and my graphics chipset is to blame. I'm including the graphics processor model for reference, curious about others'. Perhaps it's a particular version of the GPU?

In any case, the panics were a few times a week and so I coped knowing that I'd have to do a full backup and fresh OS install to fully troubleshoot it, which I don't want to do.

But recently have had to connect to an external display (projector) and now the problem is unmanageable. Under those conditions the panic occurs a few times an hour!

But thanks for sharing your experiences. After disabling all kernel extensions and still getting the crash, I'm going to save myself the headache of further troubleshooting, clone my drive and tell apple to fix it.

Because as you all have done well to point out, nothing works (excepting maybe a downgrade to 10.6.4, which I also cannot do).

Hi there,

I've been experiencing Kernel Panics since about a week ago. They are VERY annoying since they result in complete crashes (screen goes blank, only a hard reset can restart the machine). My machine: MBP 2010 i7 8GB 15hires, like most other affected MBPs .... . I've got 10.6.8 running.

No big deal if I just used my Apple to show it off at Starbucks. But I need it for productive office work. What a big let down from a company whose fans have been raving on about their qualities for many years and made me finally switch over from Windows last year ... is it buyers remorse I feel bubbling up or is it just me being angry for being stuck with software now I can't use on any other system? Apple: WE NEED A FIX FOR THIS !!!

@kballnyc: My system info shows the exact same data for the graphics card. For whatever reason, the Kernel Panics just started about a week ago. The only changes that happened during the last weeks are:

- Installing an SSD and putting the HDD in an Optibay (has been up and running for some weeks flawless)
- Upgrading to 10.6.8

... aaaaaaand, this might be the biggy:

- I got a new logic board about two weeks ago! (due to a gfx card that's been running havoc every couple of weeks ...)

Now: I would either pinpoint the problem to the update to 10.6.8 ... OR, maybe even more likely, to the new logic board. It might be interesting to follow kballnyc's suggestion and have the gfx card details checked on a few other machines. Maybe someone with a machine running flawlessly could check theirs as well? Maybe we can pinpoint the problem @ the ROM revision ...

Needless to say: It's a shame WE have to do the detectives work here. This should be Apples job. But all the support they offer at the moment is have me carry the machine to the Genius bar, then make me do a clean install of OS X and run it w/o any other machines attached to it (screen, hard drives etc.), and w/o any software. Well: Countless other forum posts testify that this WON'T change the problem. And I don't feel like wasting my time like that ...

Hey guys, I think I found a solution! This may not be so much of a hw trouble at all. I read somewhere that a guy with a similar problem took this computer to apple care and they told him to delete any files containing "windowserver" in his ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost folder. I did that (had 2 .plist files), rebooted, it crashed. But I then reset my PRAM (holding down cmd+alt+p+r at boot) and now it works, has not crashed on me so far!!

Miroz,

I just tried your solution (though there was no "ByHost" folder, there were the "windowserver" plist and plist.lockfile"), and my system booted up just fine, ran with accelerated graphics for about 5 minutes, and then crashed again... I ended up going back to disabling the accelerated graphics by using my earlier posted solution.

com.apple.GeForce; com.apple.NVDAResman Kernel Panic Issue

Issue: System stops on Kernel Panic during boot.
Solution:This is caused by the GeForce Kexts that are installed by default. The issue is resolved by removing the GeForce kexts at boot, and it can be done as followed:

boot with -s
mount -uw /
rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/GeForce.kext
rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/Ge*.kext
rm -rf /System/Library/Extensions/NV*kext
exit

Looks like this is on Apple / Nvidia to fix this...

Thanks,

Rif

It hasn't worked for me perfectly either. I booted up OK, even played a 3D game without a crash, but after I returned to the OS in a couple of minutes it crashed on me again. So it is by no means the ultimate fix, but it does help a lot, it gets the amount of crashes to the pre-Lion level, which is quite bearable. I will be sending my machine to repair tomorrow though.
