Can Apple TV use an external NAS?

I'm looking at buying a LaCie 3TB 2big NAS to use for serving media. Specifically, it will hold my entire iTunes and Aperture libraries.

The primary objective here is to have a large, expandable, RAID-mirrored storage for all media content.

Can anyone tell me if I'll have any problems making Apple TV access content directly from a NAS? This one supports AFP, Bonjour, etc. Full specs are at the URL above. I intend to simply move my entire iTunes library off my MBP's hard drive to the NAS.

I went the NAS route with the goal of getting all my iPhoto libraries (new one each year) off the computer (filling up) and not having an external HD connected to my nice and neat iMac. That seems to have been a failing proposition. Even though I can use the iPhoto library, doing it over wifi has been a chore. It's okay on the computer directly connected via ethernet to the network hub where the NAS is.

BUT, the main goal of buying the ATV2 was to be able to show all of those spiffy pics of our son to the grandparents when they came to visit. I have yet to get ATV2 to play the photos that are stored on the NAS - even though all the home sharing stuff is set up correctly, iTunes is running (seems a dumb way to see my iPhoto library), and all the other settings. It simply seems to be unable to play the photos from the NAS - even though the computer can.

And don't get me started about not being able to play any of the hundreds of avi movie container/files produced by our Canon PowerShot camera. Movies that play absolutely fine on the iMac with no special software (beyond quicktime).

My NAS is becoming more and more a place to just do backups and the mergining library functionality shared between multiple computes and iOS devices seems to be a lost cause. very frustrating.

I'm pretty sure (but not certain) that this will only stream music, not videos or photos. I've been Googling this for some time, and the conclusion I reached was that a real computer needs to be running iTunes with Home Sharing enabled to get full functionality. With that in mind, I'm probably going to get a Mac Mini (when they're refreshed with Thunderbolt) with a big hard drive attached. That's obviously much more expensive than an Apple TV and a hard drive, but so far as I can tell it's the only way to make it all work.

Hi rbrian,

I am considering buying a Mac Mini thunderbolt'd to a LaCie 2TB Little Big Disk and was wondering how your network setup is working out for you

It's working out quite nicely, though occasionally I have to reset my router to get home sharing to work. Thunderbolt discs are still far too expensive, so I'm currently keeping my iTunes library on a USB drive connected to my mini. Video streams perfectly to my new Air and to my iPhone 4s and iPad 1, so there's no real need for anything faster. Now I need a new tv so I have enough hdmi ports!
