Does AirPrint work while using 3G?

I have several iPads (1 and 2) but they are all Wi-Fi only models so I'm hoping someone can answer the question for me.

On a 3G iPad2 can you browse the web with Safari, using the 3G connection, and print a web page on an HP AirPrint-ready printer connected in ad hoc mode?

The HP printers work great with my Wi-Fi iPads. I have been testing the OfficeJet 8500A. Right out of the box I turned it on and it automatically appeared as a new ad hoc network in my iPad Wi-Fi settings. I selected that network and was able to print. Using the HP iPrint Photo app I can also scan directly to the iPad. Of course, when connected to this ad hoc network I can't access the Internet.

I'm hoping the 3G Internet access and Wi-Fi AirPrint can be used at the same time, but I have no way to test it, and I've been unable to find any information online.

Um, It's uses 802.11 wifi so it doesn't physically connnect to anything. If your printer supported adhoc networking you wouldn't even need the router (adhoc networking is a somewhat rare feature on many printers though). Once the router is setup and broadcasting you just tell the printer to connect.

How to connect to a wifi network on your printer:

I have solved this exact requirement by purchasing an HP Photosmart 6520 wireless printer. Works like a charm.

I have an iPad with 4G cellular, and I have no wireless router for Internet in the house. My only Internet connection is 4G through Verizon cellular. I have no wifi router, hence no wifi network.

The HP 6520 has a "Wireless Direct" mode, and the setup guide tells you exactly how to set it up for wireless printer if you have no wireless router.

You set up the wireless direct through the touchscreen menu, and the printer publishes its own SSID.

On the iPad, and also my iPhone, I connect to that wifi SSID.

Then using the iOS print apps in Mail, Safari, Photos, etc. - Print to the HP Photosmart and it works perfectly.

No router needed at all.

And the cool part, I can print Photos from the iPad or iPhone to the Photosmart, which has a nice 4x6 photo paper tray, and the Apps and printer are smart enough to send it directly to the photo paper (vs. the normal 8x11 paper).

And this particular printer will print 2-sided if you want it to, and this option is presented to you in the iPad and iPhone printer dialogue.

This printer was $110 at Best Buy. I am quite a happy camper. Getting one now for my mother also who has iPad with 4G but no wireless router.

Yes. From both my iPhone and iPad. Connecting to the Internet via cellular 4G, and printing to the HP printer using the printer's wifi Direct connection. The printer broadcasts a wifi connection which allows a wifi device to print to it. That printer wifi connection doesn't give you Internet access, just print access. But I get the Internet access through cellular on the phone and iPad. And I can be on the Internet, print from a web page or email, to the wifi printer.

I have the same printer and figured it out pretty easy. But I own a mac so it was just through airport. I believe you need a connection of some kind but only for a minute http://compnetworking.about.com/od/wireless/ht/setupadhocwifi.htm No need to buy anything else.

1. go to airport on mac click create network.

2. name network

3. tell printer to find network (wireless setup)

4. tell Ipad to find network (settings)

5. print from ipad.

I dont know if you can print and use internet at the same time so whatever you want to print email yourself then print from your email over the ad hoc 🙂 hope that helps!!

My God there are SO many "clever" people in here!!! I was about to write how it was done, as I just figured it out myself, having the exact same problem as the OP. But seing your brilliant explanation there's no need to elaborate further. Your explanation is clear and concise ... SPOT ON!

Thank God there are still people like you that actually shares solutions instead of all the wannabes that haven't got the slightest clue and therefore just concludes it can't be done. The solution you describe works like a charm. It even works when I've been out of my home and connected to other WiFi on my workplace, at friends and family etc. The moment I return home it works again, without further ado.

You are the man, AMagee! Cheers!
