Try holding on to the power button, till u see slide to power off. Now release power button and press the home button at the pressure you would use on the home button. It should change to the icon springboard screen( with all the icons). It should work properly after that.

Took the advice from another discussion which i was trying to find. But try it anyway it worked for me. I suspect mine is a sofeware issue that made it seem like a hardware issue.

I was having the problem with my iPhone 4. I tried the other "solutions" but they did not work. Thanks to Denver CD, I cleaned the home button, but I used a small drop of hand sanitizer, since I didn't have alcohol in the house. It worked! I always have hand sanitizer in my purse, so if the button gets stuck again, I know what to do!

I dont think alcohol will help my iphone4 home button. The home button wont work but, if i plug in the charger cable it works perfect. And it doesn't have to be connected to the mains supply or a computer. Just having the charger plug, plugged in and it works, wierd. Only thing is i can hardly walk around with the cable hanging out of the phone all day. Is this a hardware or software prob????? Anyone got any idea's!
