What is considered Mid 2010

I see there is a new firmware update for the "Mid" 2010 iMac models.

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1378

What does Apple consider to be Mid ????

I looked the iMac up in MacTracker and they say the Mid 2010 iMac was introduced in July of 2010...

I have a 27" iMac 11,3 that I bought in August 2010 directly from Apple.

I downloaded the update but was presented with a window saying the update will not work on this model.

Apparently July is the only Mid 2010 year model as my August version will not update.

I am running 10.6.7 which is a requirement for the update.

Anyone have any other ideas?

It would have been nice to see some other description on Apple's website as to what actual model this update was for rather than just "Mid" as I would have though August would also be in the "Mid" range.

I also tried this update on my wife's iMac "Early" 2010 model and it didn't work either. That was expected as this was an "Early" model.

iMac 27 (11,3), iMac 21.5 (10,1), MacMini (3,1), iPod Touch, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

Yes, it is interesting.

That is why I posted this to begin with.

So far, no one else has come up and say this firmware actually works with a "Mid" 2010 model.

Mine doesn't...

Why not? It is a Mid 2010 model.

Just for clarification for some, Apple does not sell older models in their Online Store once new models come out and are advertised in the Online Store.

They sell current models with the description as such...

Yes, if you go into the refurbished or Deal section, you can buy older models at a slight discount....

Mine was a new 11,3 model at that time in August 2010 which makes it a "Mid" 2010 model...

Anyone else able to install this on a Mid 2010 model.

Here are the models again.

21.5" 11,2

27" 11,3

I have the exact same model (11,3); purchased in early August 2010.

I just ran Software Update and was not notified of any firmware update being available.

I rest assured that Apple would certainly show that if I actually needed it.

So you should be able to relax - obviously, your model doesn't need it. Neither does mine. And I am not concerned about it.

I want to thank everyone for the replies but now I think most of you are now seeing what the problem might be...

I do have a Mid 2010 model..... Period....

Apple says the update is for Mid 2010 models.... Period

However, the firmware update will not install on my Mid 2010 model...

What is wrong with Apple for not letting us know more about this?

Did they make a mistake?

Maybe time will tell....

It's not a big deal but things like this waste our time.

Maybe this isn't for all Mid 2010 models so Apple should be more specific. Something is not right.

@babowa,

I am always relaxed Thank You....

I am also interested in why things don't work properly or aren't listed properly...

Both you and I have Mid 2010 models.

Why did Apple come out with this update for Mid 2010 models, state it as such, but doesn't work on our Mid 2010 models?

I always like to get to the bottom of things and maybe this will help others wonder why they can't update their firmware when Apple states their is an update.

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1378

Maybe it is only for some Hard Drives? Why don't they let us know a little more?

Here is my Hard Drive.

WDC WD1001FALS-40Y6A0:

Capacity: 1 TB (1,000,204,886,016 bytes)

Model: WDC WD1001FALS-40Y6A0

Revision: 05.01D06

I could really care less for my computer as it is working fine.

Just don't like to see an update of something when it really seems to be false information from Apple or at bare minimum, it doesn't work on ALL Mid 2010 models..

I too have a 21.5" iMac version 11.2. And I have been looking for Apple to provide a fix for the waking from sleep issues that have intermittently plagued this computer since I got it 3 months ago. I was told by a genus that it is a known issue and Apple should be providing a software fix sometime in the future.

Apparently this is not it, since I cannot run the update either.

Well, so do I........ but, I don't think everyone is going to wonder.

I don't check Apple's website for updates because it is utterly unnecessary. I let Software Update do what it is designed to do: check your hardware/software and tell you when there is an update available. And if SU does not offer an update, then it means that my Mac does not need an update - simple. I don't spend time wondering why other Macs are being offered an update.

@babowa,

Apparently you do as you keep posting here.

Otherwise, why keep posting on this? If it is unnecessary to you then please go somewhere where you think it is necessary for you.

According to Apple, this is for our Mid 2010 iMacs...

@MacDoctorJH,

Yes, always interesting to me about these sorta things for me. Especially when Apple says it is for our Mid 2010 iMacs.

I also have the 1TB Western Digital.

Same thing here. I have an 11,3 with the 2 TB Hitachi HD, and there is no update available for me. I downloaded it manually from the site, and it says that it is not needed. Fine by me, but I agree that Apple should state whether or not you need a certain HD or not, and not issue a blanket statement that makes it seem like it's for ALL mid-2010 models.

I too have a Mid 2010 iMac (i7) and could not install the firmware update. Like others, I have been having issues with the computer waking up from sleep and some booting issues where the computer boots into safe mode occasionally. I was hoping this firmware update would finally address these issues. Regardless, it would be nice if more details were available about the firmware update.

I just found an article on Mac Rumors (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=782693) suggesting that the Serial Number contains the information needed to determine when your machine was made, not the Model Identifier (though they may correlate to the same build periods). According to the article, the third character is the year built, the fourth and fifth are the week it was built. For mine, those three characters are 039, which translates to the 39th week of 2010, or some time between 27 Sep (Mon) and 03 Oct (Sun).

Like you, Software Update didn't present the update on my machine. I suppose I have a mid-2010 model based on the above, but I'm really not sure what Apple considers "mid" - maybe week 39 could be "late"? And yes, my Model Identifier is 11,3, and no, since Software Update isn't offering the update, I'm not worried about it (haven't experienced the issue it solves anyway, so why bother?)

That's the same link I gave in my first post...

Apple still doesn't mention which Mid 2010 iMacs need this firmware update.

One guy on MR states that some means ALL...

He really needs to read it a little closer.

"This firmware update fixes a hard drive issue that may prevent some iMac (21.5-inch and 27-inch, Mid 2010) systems from booting properly."

The above statement does NOT say that "SOME" Mid 2010 iMacs need the update.

It says that "This firmware update fixes a hard drive issue that may prevent some iMac systems from rebooting properly"...

I don't want to beat this to death but Apple certainly is not saying which Mid 2010 iMac needs the update.

All they stated was (21.5-inch and 27-inch Mid 2010)....

That includes all those models as far as I can determine from the written English language...

It appears though that this is restricted to certain Hard Drives but again, they don't mention which ones...

I, like many of the rest of the members here, have more than one Mac. I also watch out for my friends computers that are relatively unaware of updates.

So, just checking Software Update doesn't do it for me. When Apple says there is an update for Mid 2010 iMac's then that is what it SHOULD mean.....

NOT, everyone with an iMac check your Software Update and see if this update is for you.... Otherwise they could have said that.

Only Apple knows for sure and they aren't telling at this time....
