Mail Continues to Stink!

But Apple's software (Mail, Ical, Address Book) continues to stink! at best.

My mail just quit again, I cannot send attachements and Address Book continues to triplicate every time I sync.

How about an good update to Apple's software BEFORE the next update to the HARDWARE....

Please, please, Please

I came back to the discussion, because yes again! Mail Quit. I have sent your suggestions to our IT staff who are very helpful.

Mail crashing does not have anything to do with the issue you're having with attachments sent through your university mail. That was only brought up because your very first post on this topic complained about attachment problems.

I gave you some information about troubleshooting your Mail crashing problem. Have you done what I told you to do yet? You have given no indication that you have, but you are continuing to complain about how Mail needs work. Are you serious about solving this problem, or are you just trolling here?

I also want you and all to know that my mail quits regularly not only on campus, but also at home (Cox Cable Modem) and when I am on the road (hotel wireless and sprint modem)

When it does that, are you also using Citrix in order to access your email? Do you have another email account someplace where that is not required, and does it also quit when you are trying to work with it?

There must be other mac users in your community. Do you know of anyone else at all who shares your problem?

Fred,

New we are getting somewhere with further info.

While at home, are you using another address such as one provided by Cox, and using their SMTP?

Did you install the Citrix client on your Mac or Macs?

In Home/LIbrary/Mail is there a Bundles folder? If so, what is in it?

Do you have Sophos or any other anti-virus software installed?

Ernie

Thx Ernie,

Sorry for not being able to get Citrix installed, hope to get to it over the weekend.

While at home I am using the SMTP of the campus server most of the time, other times I might use the me.com

I will say that while away from my Laptop (MBP 10.6.7) for a few hours today and came back and it quit again in my office while I was not even using it.

I do know that I do not use Sophos or any other anti-virus software.

In my Home/Library/Mail, there is not a "Bundles" folder.

Thx Much

I am very sorry that Apple Mail needs so many work-a-rounds to work properly at work, home and on the road.

It doesn't. That is what we have been trying to tell you - for years. You are the only person any of us have ever heard of that reports a problem like this. However, the frequency and length of your reports on this problem make up for its uniqueness.

Have you ever run Console.app to see if there are any error messages?

Since you are convinced that some software update has caused your problem, have you ever considered restoring to the system software that came with your machine?

Hi there,

I use mail and entourage and citrix with Snow Leopard in a corporate office which is very PC centric.

I must say that I havent experienced the same issues - I connect to Corporate email servers, gmail and other mail hosts on a regular basis and dont experience these problems.

I have 30 odd years working with IT and have had (and support quite a number of macs..) When I have had issues with crashing etc. I have found that generally:

-confirming that the hardware (specifically 3rd party RAM) is ok

-updating with the combo pack (just in case something went screwy with an update)

Download and install this... when it is installing make sure all apps are closed..

I understand that there may be other mitigating factors and I would encourage you to apply the pack and test it EXTERNAL to your campus. Initially with a new user and then with your existing account. Specifically I would recommended trying the connection from your ISP to a GMAIL account and see how you go.

I believe that that should be fine and it might restore some of your faith. Internal mail servers and lockdowns etc can be a challenge to sort out and its worth making sure oyu have a good baseline.

Wishing you luck.

Thx Blue,

Mail just quit again while I was 3/4 the way into a very important email. NOT GODD!

The countdown begins and 10 more quits I am going to Office 2011.

Mail is awful and I do appreciate the many who have made very good suggestions and I have tried most all the suggestions.

Just too bad that Mail seems to need so many work-a-rounds and finger pointing toward our IT staff, while all of my other Non-apple software works just fine, including software the links to the internet.

Something is terrible wrong with Mail, iCal, Address Book recently as It used to work fine, now has gone from bad to worse.

Sorry to going to be so ticked off, loosing a long email then Mail quitting really sticks.

From your descriptions you must have a hardware issue or a config. What you are describing is not normal and certainly not typical. If this is the case, its unlikely that Office will help but feel free to try. The only possible thing it might do is talk slightly better to your local bastardised mail server if its running a MS back end..

Did you try out the combo update?

Thx ET,

It is too bad that I am painted as the bad guy while Mail continues to quit unexpectedly.

It just quit again tonight while I was attempting to answer e-mails at home.

I am just a customer who is trying to stay loyal to Apple (30 years), while at the same time prevent getting screwed after writing long emails that unexpectedly quit.

I have tried and done all that has been suggested and YES I will be switching to Office 2011 sometime soon.

Again, thx much to you and all others, who are trying to help, but please know that this issue is real and one that I truly believe Apple developers should know about and should fix

There is nothing disloyal about using the software you like the best. I own a copy of iWork (Pages, Numbers, Keynote), but I don't even have it installed. I much prefer Office 2011 as I prefered Office 2008 and 2004 before that.

The only problem anyone has with your posts is that you just want to heap abuse on Apple because there is a problem with Mail running in a hostile environment. Of all the courses of action that you could take, you choose to take the only one that has no benefit to you, your university, or to Apple.

There is no evidence that you have tried anything that has been suggested here. The evidence indicates that you just keep posting these messages in the expectation that some developer at Apple is going to see it. That is simply never going to happen. There are people at your unversity who know Macs and who want to help people like you. They would be quite happy to review your log files and submit bug reports to Apple. Apple knows people want to run Mail in environments such as yours that are hostile to Macs. They would like Mail to run better in such circumstances. Your university isn't going to help. Posting rants here isn't going to help. Taking advice form people both here and at your university will help.
