I want an iTunes icon for the desktop; but when I look in the iTunes folder under Start Menu/All Programs/iTunes, all that has in there is iTunes.exe. When I double click on it, it tries to install.
Where can I get (or how do I make) a shortcut for desktop?

Try right-clicking on the iTunes.exe and selecting "Create Shortcut", bg. Rename the shortcut as you please, and drag it on to your desktop.

Is that the iTunes icon in your Start menu, that you're clicking on rather than your iTunes.exe, bg?
In Computer, open Local disk C:\ or whichever drive you have your program files installed on.
If you have a 32-bit Vista, open the "Program files" folder.
If you have a 64-bit Vista, open the "Program files (x86)" folder.
Open the "iTunes" folder.
Right-click on the iTunes.exe file and select "Create Shortcut".
(If you have "Hide extensions for known file types" engaged in your View options, and you can't see the .exe extension, be sure click on the iTunes file in the "iTunes" folder that has the iTunes icon. (The other one is your iTunes.dll, not your iTunes.exe.)
when i do that, the icon is white with the little red and blue marks in it

Are any other program file icons on the system also showing the default-boxy-thing icon instead of the correct icon?
Chrome and Picasa did the same thing.
Hi bg: After you have right clicked on the iTunes EXE file as before, select the "Send to" option, one of the choices within there should be "Send to desktop as shortcut"

Hmmmm. If it's multiple different programs where the icons aren't displaying correctly ... and especially if it's programs installed after a certain date where this is happening ... it could be an issue with your icon cache.
Trouble is, I've never done a hands-on troubleshoot on that before, so it'd be live human experimentation on you if I tried fixing your one. (Assuming that this is an icon cache problem.)
Folks with more experience with generalised icon-trouble troubleshooting please feel free to leap in.
Otherwise, it might be worth checking in at Microsoft Answers ... maybe the Vista Files, Folders and Search forum?
