Tether iPad to iPhone
Is it possible to tether the iPad to the iPhone and use the data plan off the iPhone? And if so, would you need the 3G iPad or could you use the iPad with WiFi?

You can tether the iPad to an iPhone providing that you are running OS 4.3.2 on both devices, with the exception of iPhone 3G and must be
an iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4. Only iPhone 4 provides WIFI hotspot, whereas the other 2 only via Bluetooth. Your iPad can be either a 3G or WIFI model, but if this is what you want it done, then getting the WIFI model would be the best choice.
You must also have a tethering plan with your carrier. No tethering plan, no hotspot.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2816090 says you can't iPad and iPhone through Bluetooth. Very disappointing.

Okay. That doesn't say anything about tethering.
You can use Bluetooth to connect the iPad to an iPhone personal hotspot..
-> iOS: Understanding Personal Hotspot
-> iPhone, iPad, iPod touch: Using peer-to-peer connectivity
Maybe someone can explain this to me.. As I doesn't make much sense to me..
I've got an iPhone 4 running 4.3.1 (jb) and I've got an iPad 2 on 4.3.3 (jb) when I turn on my personal hotspot on my iPhone, the network shows up on my iPad.. Sometimes it connects, sometimes it won't... Then today I was reading that iPhone to iPad tethering wasnt actually originally supported (which seems REALLY dumb to me) but that in 4.3.2 it became supported.
So why is it that sometimes I can connect normally from iPad to iPhone.. And other times it doesn't work... Then today it wouldn't connect unless I had the 2 devices connected via Bluetooth, and then enabled personal hotspot...
Does any of this make sense?
Please don't come back with "it's because you're jailbroken" because I've been jail breaking for years and there's no issues with it
If they are jailbroken then you will need to ask who you got the jailbreak from.
Hi there to tether you must have hotspot on at all times and have an iPhone on unlimited Internet usage I rung my provider and they said this is fine to do this,I have a wi-fi only iPad 2 on 4.3.5 and iPhone 4 4.3.5 and find no problems when out and about using my phones data to use my iPad.just thought I would add to this post.
Thanks for the info. Question - why do you need an unlimited internet usage?
Because it is not limited.
Cute! Why I asked was - Tori stated that to tether you must have the hotspot on and have an iPhone on unlimited internet usage - I was asking for clarification if the unlimited internet usage on the iPhone was a requirement for tethering or if I could tether if I had a limited data plan.
Okay.
An unlimited plan is not required.
You do need to pay for tethering though.
No I don't pay for tethering I confirmed this with my provider, my bills are the same every month and I tether all the time so no cost here for me.
As long as you have a data plan you should be able to tether anytime at no extra cost, but you should confirm this with your provider just to be sure.

In the US with AT&T and Verizon, if tethering is enabled by the cell company, it's like $20 a month.
The bill will be the same very month.
Just bought an iPad 2. Apple store reps insisted that there was no way to tether it via Bluetooth to my first generation iPhone 3G. Of course you can!
Went to Future Shop and BestBuy and both let me try it and it easily "paired" and used my iPhone connection and data plan (and yes I made sure the wifi on the iPad was off). And "no" my iPhone has not been jail broken or modified in any way.
I am on Rogers and have the $30 for 6 GB data plan so there is no charge for tethering and no additional monthly fees as long as I don't exceed the 6 GB.
Really can't understand why Apple does not want people to know this. If I could not tether and share the data plan, I was not going to buy the iPad, so they got a sale in the end but no thanks to the sales people (including staff at the Genius bar) in the Apple store.
"to my first generation iPhone 3G"
It is just an iPhone 3G since there is no 2nd gen iPhone 3G.
"Really can't understand why Apple does not want people to know this."
Why would you think they don't want people to know this? Didn't you read the articles published by Apple, which I linked to above?
The Apple store reps were just not aware that it can be done. It's not that they were trying to hide it from you.
