iPad 2 Cannot Determine Location???

I have owned an iPad (gen.1) for over a year and have no issues with maps, google, etc. determining my "current location"...at home WiFi only, and I know how to fully navigate the iPad software.

I now have an iPad 2, and it "Cannot Determine Location" using the same WiFi source and working side-by-side with my gen1 iPad that works fine...even tried on other WiFi hotspots.

I have read other threads that this is a known issue with the iPad 2.

Others suggested: hard re-boot, power on-off, turn wifi on-off, check Location Services ON, and other say it fixes itself in a few days or weeks???

Others suggest mapping my wifi location with Skyhook, but again I have no issues with gen.1 iPad???

What is the correct fix for this issue?

Does it eventually work itself out?

Or are others living with this problem?

Is this a future OS fix?

Again, only an iPad 2 issue.

Thanks

iPad 2, iOS 4.3.2

Thanks for the info, I'll do a little research. Actually I am in the middle of nowhere, although my old Lynksys WRT54GL router, in conjunction with my iPad2 ( wifi only) nailed my location perfectly, it wasn't until I switched, to the new wireless N router, (for better signal), that my iPad decided to drop location services. I really don't feel like I should have to spend so much time getting this thing to work as advertised after spending so much money. I'm thinking it would be easier to just send it back for a refund and wait until they get the bugs worked out.

Location services determines your location from a database of WiFi router MAC addresses and their physical location. In the past this was done by driving vans around with special equipment to detect WiFi routers. If you just bought a new router, which, of course, has a different MAC address, it will not yet be in the location database and you will not be able to determine your location.

I also have the same probem as all you guys with the Location services not working.

However, mine did start to work a day after using it. So the theory of your MAC addy not in the database is not always the case.

Sometimes it would work and find my location straight away. However, normally it would find me at a specific address in the Australian Northern territory (Karratha). Other times it would come back as 'Cannot Determine Location'. I went to McDonalds and it found me there straight away.

Went home, it found me again. 30 mins later it found me in Karratha again (thousands of KMs away) then after a third attempt, it would only display 'Cannot Determin Location'.

After doing all the resets, hard/soft boots and 2 x system restores through iTunes it still did not consistently work.

I too went through Apple support and after being put on hold for a Senior Consultant to work out the problem, they finally came back and said "it is not my router but your neighbours.' I apparently have to go door knocking and ask my neighbours to power cycle their modems as it is affecting the Location Services.

So there you have it. That is the fix. Blame your neighbours. Their modems cause the issues. 😉

Two days ago I had the same problem and after reading all the posts none of them worked out for me , and I was not ready to reset completely my I pad. So I took a litle advice from everybody and location is working ok .LOCATION IS VERY IMPORTANT SINCE ALL THE APP LIKE GASBUDDY USE YOUR LOCATION that is why It took long time to download inf and it never went through when location was not determine .

1- I turned location off on settings , then I star opening google and other app

2- I deleted my wifi network , make sure you have the passw.

3- then I started opening google maps to make sure they could not determine my location

4- I turned off the I pad and wait 10 second , well I wait more than that

5- turn on and start browsing google, it could not brows since I did not have wifi connected

6 next I choose a network again with the passw, I mean my own network

7- turn location on . Open google and the nice blue pin show up with location, after that all tha app are working fine

I hink I have to disagree. I have access to two ipad2s. One is brand news out of the box and the other is a week in use. The week old one works great. The brand new one gets the location error while connected to the same router at the same time and at different times. A soft/hard reset does nothing and deleting networks doesn't do the trick. Apple says my iPad is fine

Thoughts?

I just got my iPad 2 yesterday. I'm having the same problem with location services not working. My 3rd gen iPod Touch with IOS 4.3.3 literally 4 inches away from the iPad has no problem finding my location. iPad just spins then says "Cannot Determine Location" This can't be blamed on the router--they're both connected through the same router-- or the neighbors routers, The iPod, which works right has the exact same "neighbors" as the iPad.

I also have apps that will not run unless they can find my location. From other messages here and on other forums it appears this is yet another widespread problem that Apple just refuses to acknowledge.

Just ran into this today on new iPad2 purchased 7/2/11. 16GB-WIFI only model.

iPhone 2 feet away finds Location instantly. iPad2....clueless.

Did Network Settings Reset...no joy. Multiple reboots...no joy.

This is very disappointing, to say the least. Plus, rather inconvenient since I use the iPad for business uses and travel a lot. Not having Location Services will be a problem....

Well after FINALLY getting the location services to work for a couple of weeks it is gone again, sorry deggie but this is a BUG with the iPad2 wifi model. I suspect it may of had something to do with Apples latest update because it was working fine before. Same router, same iPad. I just want this thing to work as advertised, don't want to purchase a 3G model when this model is suppose to work!

As advertised? Location services on the WiFi model will always be a bit iffy since it is reliant upon WiFi routers you have no control over. And if you are out on the highway somewhere that there are nor routers close enough to you then you will have no location services. If you need it that badly buy a model with a GPS chip.

I don't have an iPad 2, and I have GPS, but I suspect since we are not seeing thousands of posts saying 4.3.5 broke their location services there is not a systemic bug. So call AppleCare report your problem and see what happens.
