iPhoto 9.1.2 splitting events in iOS

Hello,

I upgraded yesterday to iPhoto 9.1.2 and after synching my iOS devices like I normally do with iTunes, I noticed my events in iOS are split into several events with the same name, but in iPhoto they show up as only one event.

For example I have an event in iPhoto labeled "Lake Tahoe 2009" and when I see events in my iOS devices (iPhone 4 and iPad 1) the event is split into:

All together they contain all the photos from that event, but I don't understand why it's splitting the event into so many. Some events are split into as many as 15 events with the same name all containing some photos of that event.

Moreover, when I see my device in iTunes, in the Photos section, I originally had it set to "Sync Photos from iPhoto - All photos, albums, events and faces". if I change it to "Selected albums, events, and faces" I get a list with all the duplicated events. (see screenshot)

You see all those repeated events? Again, in my iPhoto application, the events show up as a single one, instead of multiple copies with the same name and only a section of the photos.

This started happening when I updated to iPhoto 9.1.2

Yes, it is a problem with the merged events. And the reason for the problem is that sometimes iPhoto will list the pictures into separate folders (possibly due to the time the pictures were taken and through which camera? I'm unsure). You can see this by opening the event, and choosing the first picture and going to File>Reveal in Finder>Original File. Then if you do the same for the last picture in said event, you'll notice that it is in a different folder.

If you look at how the events are split up, and which pictures are contained within each event, you'll see that is indeed split up in regards to the folder structure within the iphoto library package.

I think it's something to do with Autosplit for events setting in Preferences.

I think it's gone through photos and split them into events of the same name but a separate one for each day, hence it looks like duplicates but you'll probably find the photos are different in each "event".

I'm going to rebuild my library, then put events "back together" - hopefully that fixes it, but not sure about going forward.

Hey emkai,

I did try to rebuild my library already when talking with Apple tech support, but didn't resolve the issue, because the issue seems to be how iPhoto is storing the images. The only temporary fix I found was to drag each event into separate folders on your desktop; then quit iPhoto; delete the iPhoto library package in your photos folder; open iPhoto; reimport the pictures by dragging the folders back into the iPhoto library. This will make iPhoto assume that since the files are coming from within a folder, they must be a contained event.

This will store the photos into one folder inside the iPhoto library package file, eliminating this problem for the time being.

Hope that helps

FYI, I only had to restore the iPhoto application, not the photo library. All the photos I added in the past few days show up fine, and the events in iTunes are restored as well.

I won't be a guinea pig for the next update, either -- I'll sit and wait for reactions first.

Hope everyone else gets their problems sorted out.

@NSShah85 - I suspect that would work, albeit temporarily??

@Gary86 - tried that method & it didn't change anything

Personally, i'm going to wait for an update. Rolling back can sometimes cause further problems i have found in the past. I'm sure Apple will fix this pretty quickly - it seems pretty obvious what the problem is, so the should find the root cause easy to locate.....

Thanks jam1107 - have had time machine running for 2 years but have never had to use it before - fantastic program! I was absolutely bricking it as I had just scanned 5 years of old photos from the 90s and the family were coming round to watch them on apple tv, and I was scared I would lose some of the photos but worked perfect. As an aside, is everyone having this problem with the latest update or is it only affecting some folk?

Dear jam1107, Am a novice on this thing but caught in same problem. May I ask if anybody can advise that to go back to prior version of iphoto, ie prior to the upgrade to 9.1.2, I can open iphoto first then click on time machine and go back to the date before the upgrade, Restore or Restore All ? Is it just that simple?

What happens to those photos and events that I have imported these last few days after the upgrade? Are you saying they would still be here even after the restore. No need to re-import, and would now be managed by the old previous version of iphoto?

As to the IOS (iphone3, iphone4, ipad2), do I then do a re-sync, but removing all those crazy splitted events appearing in those IOS first?

Would you suggest restoring back to prior version of iphoto rather than wait for fix by Apple on this problem in 9.1.2 ?

Hey @emkai - yea that is a temporary fix for now, and will bypass the current problem occuring with this update allowing you to keep this update.

And, the method @Jam1107 came up with is a great suggestion, but just as @emkai mentioned, rolling back can cause some issues that may not be evident on the outset. Since updating software doesn't only involve the application itself, but system files (ie. application support and the lot in the library folder), reverting a full application back may cause some issues with talking with other applications, and leave it a little bit more susceptible to crashes, since some files may be updated, whereas some are the older version. However, if the method has been working for some people that's a great temporary fix for those until Apple releases an update.
