We have a Princess Cruise booked for mid May and wonder if we should
take the MBP or the iPad. I have heard cruise ship internet is as slow
as old dialup and pretty expensive..
Can you pop mail from a cruise ship or do you only have access to
web mail accounts?

If you really want to keep in touch the iPad is all you need, but seriously put the toys away for a few days 🙂
Tends to be expensive on most ships and the quality of connection (speed, etc.) can vary. You might have some apps or iTunes media to enjoy while on the ship that don't need a connection. 😁
It's slow, VERY slow. On Carnival, I paid $100 for a set number of minutes (can't remember how many). Receiving mail via POP will drag on forever. I simply remoted to my computer at home, opened Outlook and downloaded my mail, or used Webmail. This was via a PC though. But an iPad sould be able to connect just the same.
I had my iPad, but it was just for entertainment. Wifey and I love playing scrabble on it in the evening, and on the plane rides.
