Why does it tell me that Macintosh HD is full when my computer is new?, Why does it tell me that Macintosh HD is full when my computer is new?

When I am using Microsoft Word I recieve two error messages. The first says that the disk is full trying to write to my Macintosh HD. The second says that Word is unable to save the AutoRecover file to the location I have specified. I am very new to Macs. Please Help!

I am battling the 'disk is full' bug now with Word 2011 on El Capitan. It first hit when I converted a .doc file supplied by a book publisher to .docx. I went back to .doc format, and it worked for a couple of days, but now is back with the original .doc format. I am updating the book and need to keep the formatting information and the equations included in the file. Change tracking is off, and as far as I know no graphics (other than equations) are embedded in the file. I am on version 14.6.9 of Office 2011, which is the latest update as of now.

Any idea what might be the problem and how to fix it? It looks to me like the same logic error that dates back to at least Word 97, in which Word gets confused in keeping track of open files, and thinks successive saves or autosaves are still open. Is that fixed in Word 2016?
