The panic occurred in the kernel code that manages power consumption by the CPU. The cause isn't obvious, but I suggest you reset the SMC and see if it happens again.

That may be an uncorrected memory error.

Your Mac Pro uses Error Correcting Code (ECC) RAM Memory. Each module has a few additional check bits that allow processor hardware to correct single-bit errors on-the-fly, and detect double-bit Errors. A double-bit error is supposed to cause a kernel panic rather than allowing the bad data to propagate.

You can run some memory tests, and/or use Apple System Profiler to monitor the status of each of your memory modules. Modules having single-bit errors at a rate higher than a few per Month greatly increase the likelihood that a double-bit error will occur and crash your Mac. Also, any module that reports it size at half the expected size has failed.

Memory errors can be difficult to pin down exactly. But there are NO false positives. If ANY test indicates a memory is doing something unusual, you can count on it to have detected bad memory.

Many thanks go to Linc Davis and Grant Bennet-Alder for their helpful replies. After restarting my Mac from the panic and posting the question here, I checked my hard disks (one from Apple and the other from OWC, both of size 1TB) using the Disk Utilities and found errors on my Macintosh HD that came with the machine from Apple. I then called the tech support at Apple. An engineer instructed me to restart the machine using the Mac OS X installation DVD, to check the hard disk again using the Disk Utilities on the DVD, and subsequently to repair successfully the hard disk. The engineer concluded that the hard disk had software errors.

I will use the machine as usual and see if any kernel panic occurs in next few days. If a kernel panic occurs again, I will take steps as suggested in the above two replies. By the way, I replaced the 3GB Apple memory with 16GB (4X4GB) memory purchased from OWC.

I performed a hardware check using the Apple Hardware Test and found a defective RAM stick bought from OWC. I have obtained an RMA number from OWC and will have the defective stick replaced (they will replace a pair of RAM sticks for me). I have now two 2G sticks in my Mac Pro. I will see if the kernel panics were caused by the defective RAM stick.

Defective RAM can cause file and directory corruption. (and file corruption can lead to RAM issues in rare cases)

You may want to do a clean install (erase) on another drive and rebuild your system.

Then keep all your personal data off the system drive.
