Importing videos into imovie on the iPad 2

How do I import videos into imovie on my iPad 2? I have videos on my iPad in movies and in my camera roll and can't import them. I also had videos in iTune that I "convert for the iPad" but those do not work either? The only video I can add to Imovie are ones created by the iPad which not the easiest tool for creating videos.

As it says on the "box":

iMovie helps you turn the HD video you shoot on your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch into a masterpiece

It's only made to edit video shot on your ipad, or similar Apple device.

I have been able to encode other video in the same format as iPhone video (720P H.264).

I then imported it into iphoto, and sync this into my iphone via a photo album.

Amazingly iMovie iOS recognised it, and I can edit it into video.

But I've only done this twice; created graphics to put regularly on my videos.

I use QuickTime Pro 7 to convert my video so that it's supported on my iPad2 & iMovie.

Here are the settings I use:

Set your QT7 pro export to: QuickTime Movie, Then go to Options, Set the following settings:

VIDEO

Compression: H.264

Frame Rate: 30fps or less

Bitrate restrict to: 10000 kbits/sec or less

Dimensions: 1280x720 or less

AUDIO

Format: AAC

Sample rate: 44.1kHz

Channels: Mono

Just see my screenshot below:

Make sure to name your file something like this: IMG_9001.MOV

Then import the file into the iPad2 by dropping it into iPhoto and syncing your device via iTunes or use your Camera Connection Kit.

Yes, you can import videos to iPad2 from just about any camera, and using a PC or Mac.

It is a 2 step process.

1- Convert the video into an iMovie friendly format

2- Import using iTunes (there is a trick to this)

Here we go:

(1)

Use a conversion program, like Handbrake, to convert your original video into a 1280x720 size. In Handbrake, use Average Bitrate (for HD movies) set to 10730 kbps. Set Audio to AAC, Stereo, 44.1kHz sample rate, 128kbps bit rate.

(2)

In iTunes, you just can't drag-and-drop your video to transfer into your iPad. You need to use the "Photos" tab and then select the "Include videos" check box (Steve Jobs, we need to talk...).

Now synch your iPad2 and the video will show up in your camera roll. Have fun!

hi guys,

There is another option for importing the vids to imovie (works 1000...%)

step 1: download ReelDirector from apple ($ 1.99)

step 2: create new project and add video from video/ photo option. then render the video,

step 3: finally export the video to the camera roll by using save to camera roll option.

step 4: once the video is saved into the camera roll (photo app) you may run the imovie app, and there it is.......your video ready to import..... guys, only the problem, you have to spend $ 1.99 (must) and buy me a tea (optional)

I suggest you download and read the manual for your iOS device.

http://support.apple.com/manuals/ipad/

There is no more suggestions to make.

If the movie is correctly formatted (mp4 or mov in the same format as your iOS device shoots) then iTunes will accept the move in the photos tab.

Import the video the same way you import photos.

If the video can be seen in the photos app, then iMovie will be able to see it.

If itunes is not accepting the video, then it is not the correct format.

Good luck

.mov file import to iPhoto - how I did it

create album in iphoto

import .mov to library first rename it thus...img_1234.mov (numbers don't matter, avoid 0000)

add the .mov file to the new album

in itunes iphone sync options, in photos, find album and tick it AND on that page tick INCLUDE VIDEOS

in "summary", tick "include only ticked songs and videos" (dunno if this last particular step is really necessary but it doesn't hurt)

(disclosure: I actually sync very little media content with iphone, don't sync with icloud so this is a per-project thing and reset to original when accopmplished)

Sync phone

Now in iMovie, your clip will be pickable

I recommend you use it and output/save your complete iMovie asap

Go back to iTunes on Mac and de-check include videos and the album you checked in "photos"

Sync again, it will be gone from phone

One other little iMovie1.3 thing: if you are using any of the trailer formats - they require video, not stills, so plan ahead...have something you want to use in your trailer that acts like a still? video a few seconds of it with your phone (or import as above) first
