Importing videos into imovie on the iPad 2

Kevin, you will NOT see a vid clip imported via iTunes in Camera Roll OR Videos - the ONLY place you will see it is AFTER you have launched your iMovie project and are inserting video clips...the clip will appear there along with existing Camera Roll media.

So an option is to create an iMovie project and import only that clip you got in via iTune then save THAT project as a movie to your camera roll. Then it will be there forever and ever.

Go back to iTunes on Mac/PC and dump the vid from iTunes so it does not sync back into your iOS again to save memory there.

Also, iMovie on iPhone has cool but limited titling. I used a drawing app on my mac to create a 640x480 graphic–black with white text with url, etc. and shot a still and a 2 second vid clip for using in the output.

Sound volume is a problem, will be using a bluetooth mic soon. Here's a vid.

Maybe this has already been suggested.

If I shoot video with my iphone 4, I then import the movie into iphoto on my desktop computer.

I then plug my ipad in to sync with itunes. Once the ipad shows up in itunes, I go to the photos tab and select the event or album that the video now lives. I also check to include all videos.

I then hit sync and the movie gets added to the ipad.

I can then import the movie into imovie.

Is that what you are talking about?

However, I use handbrake to convert, but leave all the details the way they are by converting to Ipad. I do this because my phone films in widescreen and your settings made it stretched. If I leave it 'standard' the quality is better and Imovie still recognizes it.

So, now I can begin editting my old camera films into a Imovie-trailer!!! THANK YOU!!!

I'm new to iMovie on the iPad, but this technique worked for me: I had some videos saved in my Dropbox. I opened the Dropbox app on my iPad, selected a video, and tapped "Save Video". The video was saved to my camera roll, and I could then edit it with iMovie.

I can't guarantee this will work for all movies, but it worked for me. Worth a try (especially if you already use Dropbox).

(I should point out: all my videos were .mov QuickTime movie files. Other parameters varied though).

Generally, any video that can be exported to the Camera Roll can be edited by iMovie.

Could you do the same thing by using these settings in After Effects, do you know?

Could you export with these settings from iMovie and then bring the video into iTunes?

If you couldn't tell, I'm trying to avoid purchasing Quicktime Pro 7. It's not the most recent version, is it?

1. You will NOT want to purchase QT7 Pro just for its conversion capabilities. (Actually, Handbrake's clearly better at converting videos than both QT7 and even iTunes' "Convert to iPad format".) It's mostly at accessing individual elemental streams and cutting some scenes out of a MOV file that it excels at.

2. After Effects, while not meant for "strictly" recompression and the like, should be able to handle this task. Nevertheless, I don't recommend it for this either - use Handbrake.

I hoping I'm not duplicating any information already posted here but the solution is simple - It hurt my head trying to work it out/looking everywhere for an answer. So I hope this helps someone.

1. Get the video you want to use in iMovie for iPad/iPhone.

2. Take the clips you want to edit on the iPad and make sure they are .mp4 (this works best I have found) (Optional) If they are short clips I edit them into one using normal iMovie and export that.

3. Use MPEG Streamclip (free app search google) to covert said files into .mp4 if they are anything else.

Drag and drop these outputted videos into a folder stored in your pictures folder on your computer.

Go to iTunes and sync the pictures folder containing the videos (make sure you have checked the sync videos box on the pictures tab)

And away you go. The videos will appear in iMovie for iPad/iPhone.

Again I hope I didn't miss this answer somewhere else and that this information is useful to someone.

Thanks to everybody. It's incredible that to import videos into a video-editing program it's so hard.

I'm very disappointed. Anyway. I followed the procedure (so sync with photo and include videos) but in this way there's no way to manage video's directly in the Iphone, i mean after sync i cannot delete the unuseful videos from the Ipad or for example if I put blank into the sync flag of the photo tab in itunes all the videos' disappear...

There' is a way to import videos (also made with iphone4) into the ipad using the APP folder in itunes in the section sharing files?

Nope - it's VERY restricted. You can't import from anywhere except the Camera Roll. No Documents directory, no synchronized Movies.
