Q: How do I upload a song from itunes to garage band on my ipad?

You can transfer from the garageband app to iTunes but I don't think you can go the other way.

In iTunes highlight the song you want to get into garageband. Go to File, Show in the finder. in the window that opens drag your audio file to an open spot in your open garageband project window.

Excuse, I did not see iPad. When your iPad is conected to your Mac you should be able to drag or sync, even e-mail the audio file to your iPad.If you drag the audio file into Quicktime Player 7 you can share it, email it to the iPad. If you have more questions, post back.

It's possible to get an audio file onto the iPad, but there appears to be no way to import an existing audio file into GarageBand on the iPad which is what the OP was asking. The only audio files it works with are Apple's prerecorded loops, unless there's a trick or workaround I haven't been able to find.

FWIW, a GarageBand song is a .m4a file.

BTW, Windows Media Player can play it on a Windows PC.

This file can be transferred to GarageBand on an iPad using iTunes.

This is a poor way of doing this but the only way I found to do this is to record your music into the sampler using the microphone then record the sample. I don't like doing this because of clarity and lack of manipulating the track once created. It would be nice if GB added this feature. Also it would be cool if you could mix down the tracks into one so we could have more tracks to work with.

You need the song in an uncompressed format (wav or aiff) and you need Garageband '11 on your Mac if you want to be able to get the session off your iPad and back to your Mac, although you can probably still export to the iPad with GB '08 or even earlier- you're just using GB on the Mac to convert the file.

Here's how to do this under iOS 4- it might change under iCloud, who knows.

1. On the Mac, pick the track you want from iTunes, right click, Show In Finder.

2. Still on the Mac, launch GB, start an empty project. Go back to your Finder window, drag & drop the song mp3 into GB, which uncompresses the file.

3. In GB, go to Share, Export Song to Disk, and ensure 'Compress' is unchecked in the following dialogue box.

4. Back to iTunes. Plug in your iPad and click on its icon within iTunes. Select the 'Apps' tab, scroll down to File Sharing, click on Garageband's icon in the left column. Click 'add' on the bottom right. Go find the file you made in step 3.

5. Sync your iPad if it didn't already automatically do so. Start GB and create a new song with a blank Audio Recorder track.

6. Click on the jigsaw piece (sections.) Set Section A to 'Automatic.'

7. Tap anwhere in the empty track to get the 'Import' button.

8. Pick the aif file you mde in step 3 and synced in steps 4-5.

9. Enjoy!

Hello, all I have is the iPad, my laptop runs Windows 7. I have the song I need in my iTunes on my iPad, but I cannot get it into Garage Band, do you know how to do this?

You need to connect the iPad to your laptop, open iTunes, select iPad. Go to the apps tab, scroll down to File sharing.

yes I dont see anything of manage music on my itunes..all it says is upate and please why isnt it simple any more..trying to put music on to my itunes it was easy on the old itunes now i got to jump through hoops with this b.s

Im not seeing it the set up is totally different device icon is at the top right of my screen..on itunes meaning is not the same as the standard old one

The device location within iTunes is the only thing that has changed. After you click on your device you go to the apps tab and scroll down to file sharing. If you want to revert to the old style you can go to view - show sidebar.

i do understand it, i did it once before but now when i scroll down theirs nothing only scrolling down is the apps side far left the right doesnt scroll at all and at the bottom it has the storage space and sync sign thats all..do i need a mouse or so because I have only my macbook pro laptop? silly as it sounds
