Unexplained 02 Data Allowance Drain at Midnight

Hi all. I don't think I've ever had reason to post on here before so I'm hoping that, perhaps, some of you knowledgable lot might be able to help me.

I've had an iPhone on 02 (UK) since they first came out and with each year have upgraded to the latest model. I've had the iPhone 4 since July last year.

I know that recently 02 reduced their "Unlimited" data allowance to 500MB. This never really caused me concern because I never really used data apart from when I was at home over Wi-Fi. Recently, however, I've received a text message saying that I was 80% through my 500MB allowance. I thought this a bit strange but paid an extra £5 for 500MB more to cover me for the rest of the month.

Now, tonight, curious about what I had done differently to accrue such a large use of my data allowance, I checked my bill. It seems that every evening, normally around midnight, I have a large data usage. Now, previously, I'd guessed that the data usage accrued throughout the day was submitted to 02 in one large chunk. However, on the 26th April I used 340MB of my 500MB data allowance, and the next day used a further 180MB!

I couldn't understand where this had come from; I do not live-stream TV or radio over 3G. I don't even do that over Wi-Fi! I don't download anything over 3G. Whilst I'm at work and whilst I'm at home I'm under a Wi-Fi connection. The only data allowance I might use is a quick check of Facebook for 5 minutes before I walk into work in a morning.

Now, on the two days that I've accrued these massive data usages, I made several Facetime calls to my partner who was away training for a new job. This is the only thing that I've done differently. I thought that Facetime usage came out of your Wi-Fi and NOT your data allowance.

Anyway, through 02's website, they offer a chat service with their online representatives. I used this service to talk to someone who, I had hoped, might have been able to help. Now through subsequent phone calls to 02 I have actually learnt that much of what this person told me is untrue but here is what i was told.

Facetime calls are chargeable.

  • The person later corrected herself on this.

Facetime calls will start via Wi-Fi but if, for whatever reason, connection is lost, Facetime will be maintained via 3G; "If some time the Wi-Fi get discoonected you connected to 3G for the beter responce" 02's representative explained.

  • I don't think that this is true but it might explain my massive data use; the call was about an hour long. Having said that, how do iPod Touches maintain their connection; I've got a 4G Touch and despite using it for the occasional Facetime call, have never had a problem.

Facetime depletes your data allowance

  • I thought that the fact that Facetime is done over Wi-Fi means that it would be deducted from the unlimited Wi-Fi allowance and NOT the 3G/data allowance.

The person then seemingly contradicted herself by saying that Facetime calls made over Wi-Fi are completely at Internet Service Provider's costing & discretion. The lady explained: "I'm sorry for this but the Facetime is work on Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi service providers are different"

The person told me to delete Facetime so as to better conserve my data allowance if I needed to make it last!

  • I don't think this is even possible. I explained this and she then said "No, don't delete Facetime".

After that I think I was even more concerned than when I started!!

At this point the lady offered me a £2 credit against my account, which whilst appreciated, doesn't really solve the problem. She gave me 02's iPhone Technical Support line (2302) as it was a "technical issue".

Now, having rung 02 and explained the situation, they explained that whilst Facetime wasn't strictly chargeable, it does still come off your data allowance. However, if you exceed your 500MB data allowance, you do not get charged any more, the level of service is simply a "bit slower". In essence, it was explained, the Facetime calls hadn't cost me anything.

I explained that whilst the calls weren't costing me anything in themselves, I was still having to pay extra to maintain the same service-level that I had previously experienced. The lady agreed with what I was saying and said that she would consult with two different departments to see if she could trace what the large data-usages originated from.

The lady returned and explained that, further to her discussions with other departments, Facetime couldn't possibly be the result of the data usage. She said that it had to be TV/Radio streaming. I know categorically that the only thing that I used my iPhone for that night was the Facetime calls. I don't stream any content at all! For viewing of any content I use a TV or, for iPlayer, my PS3 or iPad, but never my iPhone!

I stressed this to the lady that it could only be the Facetime and she denied that it could be. She went back to her department and checked again. Upon her return she asked what time I had made the Facetime calls (which were around 8pm). Having explained this she said that the data usage occurred at 00:00:00 and that as such it could not have been the Facetime calls. I know that Facetime calls can't be done over 3G so I can see the point that she's making but what else could it be?? And at that time??

I looked at the bill myself and pointed out that at 00:00:00 almost every night I had a data-usage, not just on the nights in question. I said that having already noticed this previously, I assumed that the iPhone simply submitted the total data-usage in one go and not just as-and-when. The lady said that data would be submitted as it was used and that, with neither party able to explain the usage, it must be down to a third-party using my data allowance remotely from the phone overnight.

I don't think that data is shown on the bill as and when it was used because on occasions when I know I've used 3G, no mention is made on the bill.

Now my partner has 02 and we had checked that bill to see whether he had a massive data usage which corresponded to mine, which he didn't. He has data usages at midnight most-nights but for the Facetime calls (some of which were made by him) he has no excessive data usage.

I've searched via Google and found various other people on various other networks who have the same mysterious midnight data-usages.

Still on the phone with the poor lady from 02 I pointed this out, which she couldn't really answer. She said that she was contacting a Security department who could directly check what the content related to and that she would get back to me within 5 days, which, with the current Bank Holidays in the UK, is likely to be a week on Tuesday. She remains adamant that my iPhone is being accessed remotely, or "is being updated by third-party apps" which, with the number of people having similar midnight data issues, I doubt.

I know this has turned out to be a mammoth post, and for that I'm sorry, but has anyone else had similar experiences? How have they been resolved?

Does Facetime get taken off your data allowance? One person from 02 says yes, another says no.

Finally what could the two massive data-usages relate to, if not Facetime? I know that there's likely no way to prove that I wasn't streaming TV/radio content but I can say with absolute certainty that no such feature was used.

We had used the GPS for hiking one day in the month but my usage for that particular day in question was only about 30MB so I've ruled that out.

The icing on the cake was that at the end of the conversation, when it was explained that all that could be done was wait for the Security department to get back in touch, the lady asked me "What are iPhones like then? Mine's been delivered today and is waiting for me at home."

Suffice to say I was shocked almost speechless. Almost anyway...

I've got her line & extension number so in the event that she doesn't bother to call me back, I can call her.

Hope you can offer some insight though!!

Update:

Vodafone (on becoming sick of me questioning them) contacted Apple who claim to have an issue with the iPhone 4 - App Store / itunes both access the internet at night to update (spy?). Apples solution....Turn off your 3g & data!

Clearly this is not the reason as many users are on 3g & 3gs, and I know of friends who are constantly on their iPhone 4, with background apps running that cannot acomplish the levels of useage being quoted on these forums....

Interestingly when I has my 3g it was not on an iphone plan....just an old one with a 500mb allowance.....it is only since switching to the new iphone plan that all the data sillyness has started.....which brings me back to the prospect of this being Apple's fault somehow...

Further to my last post, I have only been switching off the 3G and Cellular Data when not using the phone, and turning off apps after use.

I had to use the Tom Tom Sat-Nav app a couple of times this week, and I needed to check maps a couple of times in the last few days. But after each app was no longer required, off they all went.

As a result, I have drastically cut my Data usage and my recent useage for the last 6 days have been at most 4Mb per day.

Overnight, the 3G and Cellular data are double checked that they are off before I go to bed, all that stays on is WiFi. Therefore, the phone is not in a position (hopefully) to send or receive Data.

I haven't dented the free 500Mb that O2 gave me and am still on my regular Data allowance, and still have 14 days to go.

Considering that my average consumption over a month on my iPhone 4 since June, and even on free unlimited data with my iPhone 3G was around 100 - 150Mb one can only assume that the massive data useage was down to O2.

Sadly I have needed to resort to leaving 3g & data off unless specifically required....then turned straight back off again! My lovely iPhone aint so smart anymore, but at least I remain within my data limits. Onovo has been a worthwhile app as it saves hugely with FB & Youtube.

Interestingly, the guy @ vodafone who was managing my case tells me that after his lil chat with Apple, the iPhone 5 / IOS5 is going to be an absolute data monster, making the current issues in this forum small-fry in comparison....

Happy days ahead :-)

I too can verify that there is a real problem here but my accounts are with Vodafone so it's not limited to O2

One of my employees has just had an £890 DATA download bill in ONE MONTH for WAP data downloads on an Iphone all of which happen at Midnight.

£890!!!!

Needless to say I shall be getting to the bottom of why Vodafone / Apple don't warn people of this. In the meantime I am asking all the users on our account to disable data roaming and 3G.

It really is appalling.

Right. I think O2's data metering system is shot to bits. I have just done a check and received widely disparate readings.

The data monitor on my iPhone O2 App says I have used 8.64 emgs

The O2 website My Allowances says 10.88

The O2 website recent charges says 83.38

And my iPhone settings counter says 91 megs

How's then for...err....apples ?!!

Nearly a month since the last post. Has this issue now gone away of its own accord? Have the providers realised their scam was tumbled? Or has something like the iOS5 upgrade solved things?

For other reasons, such as iPad tethering I've increased my data allowance with O2, so if it comes back for me, I'll really be on the warpath!

Grateful to know the experiences recently of others?

I have been switching off 3G, Cellular Data and Data Roaming when I'm at home, so it has to connect to WiFi. I also shut down all the apps I'm not using when I've finished with them. That way, I'm not defaulting to data when the phone sleeps.

It appears that O2 are struggling with their Data at the moment as the website check and the O2 App are completely out of sync with the Billing, as my recent usage is 125Mb, yet for the bulk of the month the O2 App has been showing 6Mb, and in the last two weeks it's been off line for Data usage

.

I can only assume that the massive data use WAS O2s fault as they admitted to me back in September, when I queried my alledged massive useage.

I still keep monitoring it on a regular basis in case O2 fall again.

Hasn't been sorted, this has just happened to me. From the 17th to 26th Oct my bill shows absolutely massive data usage at midnight. I'm always connected to Wifi at this time, according to the O2 advisor some apps connect to 3G even if you're Wifi is on as they can't function on Wifi, pretty sure this is incorrect I don't think she had a clue to be honest. Will just have to make sure 3G is switched off overnight, how do you make sure all the Apps are off? Cheers.

O2 appear to round up their data and subtract it from your allowance around midnight, regardless of whether the 3G is on or off, so it's worth investing in Onavo (Free app) to cut your usage, and/or Dataman to monitor your usage. Since my last post, the data meter and the recent usage appear to be in sync again on the "My O2" page so you can gain an idea of where you are up to.

When you speak to the patronising "advisors" at O2, you should ask to speak to the iPhone team, as some of the people I speak to appear to have difficulty in reading the script never mind advising me. Don't be put off by them.

To turn off apps, double press the home button and a task bar with all the open apps appears. Hold one of the apps until they wobble and you'll see a red dot with a white line across (a bit like a 'No Entry" road sign). Press that and the icon will disappear from the bar. Keep pressing the the red dots until all the apps are gone.

Once the bar is clear, then press the home button again and the apps are off.

Mind you, you need to keep monitoring your usage like a hawk to keep O2 on their toes.

Hi All

I posted earlier in this thread after one of my employees phones was charged £890 in ONE MONTH by vodafone all of which as far as I am concerned was due to Midnight data downloads.

Vodafone completely refused to admit that there was any issue with Iphones. Clearly there is.

They refused to refund any of the data cost. Claiming that the user had exceeded his data allowance on other data transactions - even though the transactions which cost so much money were the midnight ones.

I have a business to run and just have not got the time to keep on and on flogging a dead horse (vodafone) but I must say I'm disgusted that so called experts either don't know about the problem or steadfastly refuse to admit to there being a problem.

Anyway, the best advice I have got from these threads is the downloading of the App 'Onavo' and all my phone users have now been told they must turn their 3G off at night.

So far this seems to have helped,

Thanks all!

Not on my own I see. Having had this same problem 3 months running, I down loaded an app that measures data usage. On getting the message of having used 80% of my 500mb I phoned O2 to tell them that my app says I have used only 80.3mb. I was told that these apps cant be trusted and his screen was telling him my usage was 190 but that the info was updated at midnight and I should phone back the next evening. Before I could do this I got the message telling me I was now over the 100%. I phoned explaining that it cant be right as I had not left the house during this period and I use wifi at home. I was asked to double click the start button and that all at the bottom of the screen work constantly in the back ground even when switched off and that I should cancel them. She made out it was an advantage to have these constantly updating. What advantage is it to me to have the weather constantly updating when it only takes a second to switch it on from cold I asked. I still dont buy her suggestion that this is the reason and am amazed that apple would build in such a cr*p idea. Not happy at all even if she did give me a free 500mb.

Hello, new to this but thought this may be useful.

I have just spoken to O2 again. Surprised to hear that they admitted there was an issue and that they are in contact with Apple to get this matter resolved.

To their mind it was linked to the new operating system and the latest updates have not resolved the issues. Their recommendation until there is yet another update was to turn off locational services and control the number of apps running un the background.

Intersetingly i have spoken to a friend on Orange and they have the same issue regarding usage since they updated their phone software and another colleague who is on Vodaphone whos usage had gone up by 400%.

Looks like again over to Apple who I guess will deny the issue existes and then issue an update!!
