ipad 2 screen repair (it works fine but little bit cracked)

my 10days old ipad 2 was dropped from about 30cm above and it hit my feet and to a wooden desk by an accident - I was on the desk and trying to grab my ipad and somebody tapped me and i dropped- and the screen is cracked but it works still fine. Only problem is cracked screen sometimes bothers me. I've called apple for repair and advisor asked me $420... is it really $420? though ipad 2 works 100% fine??

I am very disappointed because of this situation, as a huge fan of apple's - I have iphone 4, macbook pro, and ipad 2 and the response from apple makes me have questions if I got a problem with my iphone and macbook pro someday later.User uploaded file

I hope apple can change the glass part... $420 is ridiculous.

Let me tell you what I have learned. ALL of my devices are Apple products. MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhones, and most recently, iphone5. You would think that this would make life easier, but no. Apple is so **** big headed, they don't give a **** about their customers. As they recently slipped from the #1 corporation slot, their customers are fleeing. As my devices become obsolete, I will not replace them with Apple products. I am done. How much are they charging their loyal customers for that tiny piece of plastic to adapt iPhone 4 chargers and accessories to the iPhone 5? $30? And how many videos can we not download because of Apple's refusal to allow such things as Flas Player? No one else has to deal with such crap. Good luck Apple. Word on the street is that people are fed up with your arrogance.

What Apple needs to do is ensure the customer understands they are not responsible for you doing stupid things. How any of you people can actually say "not fair" or "goodbye Apple" is just beyond me.

You ever guy a car and scratch up the door and drive back to the dealer expecting them to repair it for free? Or you throw your WII into your TV and break it and expect Sony to just fix it?

You had the option of buying a warranty. You had the option of putting it in a case. And you had the option of acting like an adult, taking care of of it, and not expecting Apple to wipe your nose when don't have the sense to come in from the rain.

Apple is fortunate you started buying android stuff. It would be worth it not to have to listen to the incessant whining of all you "entitled" people.

I guess Thor hog has never accidentally dropped something. I think part of the issue here is apple should build a less fragile product. I "accidentally" dropped my blackberry from about 30 feet at the warehouse I work at. It bounced off the ground, the back came off, the battery came out. I put it back together and it worked like a charm. You drop an iPhone from 3 feet and it is a goner. Just remember the next time you accidentally drop something, you are just as stupid as the rest of us, who apparently are stupid for "accidentally" dropping an inferior product (construction-wise).'

You're right, I should have rephrased that line - dropping something is not stupid. Thinking you can drop something, break it, and that the manufacturer is bad and wrong for not fixing it for free, or not fixing it for what you think they should charge is the stupid part. Or maybe I should say "naive" instead; that's less insulting.

I've dropped my iPhone plenty and it's just fine. Granted, that was on carpet mostly, but I've dropped it in the driveway. Drop a HP laptop from 3 feet and see what happens. That too is specifically designed for mobile use. However, my 13 month old boy dropped my iPad and it hit the corner and bent the volume button. My fault of course for letting him hold it. Then I followed the "dissassembly" instructions for was was supposted to be an iPad 2, but they were the instructions for an iPad 1. I completely cracked 1/2 the screen. THAT was stupid. But it was all my fault, or an accident, or whatever. What is a 3-foot expection for you may be a 5-foot expection for someone else. They can't solve for that. They CAN solve for offering a warranty, cases, covers, ear buds, etc.

Again, I totally accept your challenge of the "stupid" statement. I apologize for the way I wrote that. If one were charged the full cost of the phone the $900 or whatever) rather than the "free" one you get for a 2 year contract, then I would think the $150 full-replacement would be a deal.

It's the "entitled" bit and the "someone else should pay for my mistakes" bit that got my boxers in a bind; that and the hypocracy of these people calling Apple "arrogant."

No worries t. I get what you're saying as well. I recently bought an android tablet and they were such a good deal I bought two more for my kids to mess around on. If they break them, still cheaper to just get a new one. My daughter dropped hers and the back came off but fortunately it just snapped back on. I still think apples iPad is a great product compared to all the rest I've tried but they are just so darn fragile. I put a Survivor case on mine and it is very bulky and heavy but at least I should be protected.

Sorry to hear of the mis-hap with yours, but I probably wouldn't attempt that on my own.

Take care.

Awwww, I am so sorry for what happened to your iPad. Honestly $420 is a RIDICULOUS amount to pay for a screen repair, thats practically the same price as a new iPad. I've actually seen a friend of mine replace their own iPad screen. He got himself a new screen and used random tools to take off the old one. Depedning on how bad the damage is, you could probably fix it yourself with one of those DIY kits. And theres tons of youtube videos to help you through the process. I feel your pain, my ipad is liek my baby. I have a tiny crack also, so I was considering replacing my screen, but the ipad works just fine. I actually came accross this repair kit, its the cheapest one Ive found so far, but its only for repalcing the digitizer. Hope this helps and best of luck. And you should probably invest in a great case also, I would suggest otterbox.

I know some people on here are saying that the repair is pretty easy, It's not easy if you have an iPad 2. I watched the video and have a friend who tried to do the repair on his own using one of those kits. He ended up messing up the power button and the volume buttons in the process. At least his screen is fixed I guess. I just ended up sending my iPad to ipadscreenrepair.com instead. They did a great job with the repair for $120 and it it comes with a warranty.

There are lots of companies that can repair the screen on your ipad...... your first point of call should oviously be apple to see if they will replace the ipad for you free of charge, if not and you cant affored apples hefty replacement price then it is time to start looking for a third party repair cetre who will be able to repair your ipad.

i am from the uk and here i use a company called apple repair centre - i have owned all the ipads since the first one came out and you can guarentee i some point or another i have broken each one, so it's good for me to have a reputable repair shop on speed dial lol.

The thing you need to watch out for when having a screen repaired is cheap repairs..... DON'T DO IT!!!

cheap ipad repairs use screen that are of very poor quality and will not last long at all, also the repair shop will give you a very small warranty period.

one thing to remember is the repair shop offer a full year warranty then they are using high quality ipad screens if the repair shop offer 3 months or less you can guantee they are using poor quality screens.

just a couple of thing to look out for.

Thank you, Apple, for your extreme display of generosity in replacing this used, broken product for a new working unit at such a deep discount, unavailbale to the general public. You replaced a broken product of mine that you had no part or fault in the breaking of and in no way claimed to insure it against my lack of care and responsibility, attempted to charge me for said protection, or misrespresented yourself as a glass repair store in and upon my lapse of care when I need to transfer misplaced anger and deny responsibility and expect you sort out my issue right away. I realize that you don't have to do this as it was my fault that i wasn't more responsible with the care of nor did I take advantage of the many available products that would have protected the product from my blatant negligence: and I emphasize blatant because your product is highly resilient to normal everyday usage and takes a fairly significant drop onto a hard, unforgiving surface to only crack the surface while retaining all other functionality.

I only just dropped and cracked my iPad screen today. I have read all the posts on this subject after getting an estimate for repair. I can only say this:

I have arthritis and very crooked fingers. I have dropped my pad in the house without problem but this time it was getting out of the car on the cement garage floor. I don't expect Apple to make a product that is indestructible. But the iPad was purchased refurbished and to charge nearly the cost of the whole product is ridiculous. It is outrageous, actually. To those who made comparisons, I agree with the comments that suggest you would need to pay 80% of the cost of a car to replace a broken windshield, if Apple made cars.

My question, for anyone who can answer, relates to the non-Apple authorized service centers. Have any of you used them and can you verify the quality of the work done? I can't see myself paying for a repair that costs as much as a new (refurbished) pad would cost.
