ipad 2 screen repair (it works fine but little bit cracked)

my 10days old ipad 2 was dropped from about 30cm above and it hit my feet and to a wooden desk by an accident - I was on the desk and trying to grab my ipad and somebody tapped me and i dropped- and the screen is cracked but it works still fine. Only problem is cracked screen sometimes bothers me. I've called apple for repair and advisor asked me $420... is it really $420? though ipad 2 works 100% fine??

I am very disappointed because of this situation, as a huge fan of apple's - I have iphone 4, macbook pro, and ipad 2 and the response from apple makes me have questions if I got a problem with my iphone and macbook pro someday later.User uploaded file

I hope apple can change the glass part... $420 is ridiculous.

Thanks for the info. I have read a lot and am considering options. It appears that Apple does not actually repair your glass but sends a "new" iPad, probably a refurbished, which is what I bought initially at about the same cost as the original refurbished slightly over a year ago. This is the most expensive option and I'm without my iPad for however long it takes.

The second option is the authorized apple computer store which in our area is 60 miles away. They quote $189.?? and I have to drive or send it in, is still expensive and I'm also out of a pad.

The third option is a source like the one you recommended, and if I'm going to have to pay and be without the pad, I may as well use this option as they seem to be less costly. To those who say it voids warranty on further repair, I don't think I have any warranty left now, anyway.

The fourth option I investigated is do-it-yourself. I watched the video on you tube, I've done a lot of fine, crafty work and some small electronics. That being said, I'm still apprehensive. My husband says go for it. I just think the simple wiring I've done for my Christmas village lighting doesn't compare in complexity. Some of the Amazon reviews for kits say the glass is not the same as the original. I have found sites that sell what is supposed to be the real screen apple uses, but I don't know. Frankly, I am the original do it yourselfer who has reached an age when I'm finally thinking WTH am I doing everything myself for, anyway!

The last option I am looking at, and would like your or anyone's opinion on is this: I have thought of getting a new, refurbished iPad 3 with retina display, which is what I have, then sell my old one online. I have not investigated it too much, but it appears there is a market for used iPads, even damaged ones. What do you know about this? It might be a way to recoup some of the loss of the cost of repair.

The last thing I wanted to ask, if you know, is how long the battery lasts in one of these devices before it no longer will take on or keep a charge? I have read ways to conserve battery and I try to let it run way down before recharging, dim the lights, etc. but I know EVENTUALLY I will need it replaced. I use my pad ALOT. I'm recently retired and read on it frequently. I also use it for craft project resources. I am looking at having yet another arthritis related surgery (when I can no longer put it off) and will definitely use it then. I can't seem to find anything specific as far as the duration of a battery beyond vague it-depends-on-use. Sometimes I don't turn it on and other days it is on all day. Has anyone had to replace a battery and how long did it last? It would be annoying to fix the screen only to find out I need a new battery a few weeks later.

Hope I haven't bored you, but I would appreciate some feedback. Thanks.

Hey there,

I was just wondering if this response was under the one year warranty or under Apple Care. I have had such wonderful experiences with Apple I buy apple care for all my apple products to extend the warranties. I feel like it's a small price to pay for the protection that we get.

Sorry you feel that way!

there are places that do it for much less, just do a search,

it appears that Apple is still ripping off its customers with a similiar shady practice in 2016. I brought my old iPad 4 with a broken screen for repair to Apple Store in Zurich and they offered a swap repair, which is not really a repair in my view for a price of approx USD 350!!! What a price tag for a three year old and technically inferior and obsolete product when you can buy a NEW Android tablet for less. So three years later Apple can still sell old products to their loyal customers with a huge margin profit. Alternatively they offer you to buy new iPad with 10% discount. You come hoping for a reasonably priced repair service and they try to sell you more stuff in exchange. Apple employees also behave in a very cynical manner with this "take it or leave it" approach. Such shady business practices should be prohibited by a regulator. It would be great to hear Apple's feedback on this but they are not really listening. There is no even easy way to file a complaint. Very ugly.
