Thanks for the info. I have read a lot and am considering options. It appears that Apple does not actually repair your glass but sends a "new" iPad, probably a refurbished, which is what I bought initially at about the same cost as the original refurbished slightly over a year ago. This is the most expensive option and I'm without my iPad for however long it takes.
The second option is the authorized apple computer store which in our area is 60 miles away. They quote $189.?? and I have to drive or send it in, is still expensive and I'm also out of a pad.
The third option is a source like the one you recommended, and if I'm going to have to pay and be without the pad, I may as well use this option as they seem to be less costly. To those who say it voids warranty on further repair, I don't think I have any warranty left now, anyway.
The fourth option I investigated is do-it-yourself. I watched the video on you tube, I've done a lot of fine, crafty work and some small electronics. That being said, I'm still apprehensive. My husband says go for it. I just think the simple wiring I've done for my Christmas village lighting doesn't compare in complexity. Some of the Amazon reviews for kits say the glass is not the same as the original. I have found sites that sell what is supposed to be the real screen apple uses, but I don't know. Frankly, I am the original do it yourselfer who has reached an age when I'm finally thinking WTH am I doing everything myself for, anyway!
The last option I am looking at, and would like your or anyone's opinion on is this: I have thought of getting a new, refurbished iPad 3 with retina display, which is what I have, then sell my old one online. I have not investigated it too much, but it appears there is a market for used iPads, even damaged ones. What do you know about this? It might be a way to recoup some of the loss of the cost of repair.
The last thing I wanted to ask, if you know, is how long the battery lasts in one of these devices before it no longer will take on or keep a charge? I have read ways to conserve battery and I try to let it run way down before recharging, dim the lights, etc. but I know EVENTUALLY I will need it replaced. I use my pad ALOT. I'm recently retired and read on it frequently. I also use it for craft project resources. I am looking at having yet another arthritis related surgery (when I can no longer put it off) and will definitely use it then. I can't seem to find anything specific as far as the duration of a battery beyond vague it-depends-on-use. Sometimes I don't turn it on and other days it is on all day. Has anyone had to replace a battery and how long did it last? It would be annoying to fix the screen only to find out I need a new battery a few weeks later.
Hope I haven't bored you, but I would appreciate some feedback. Thanks.
