Proximity Sensor not working on White iPhone 4

I am now on my 3rd White Iphone 4. Every single one has had an issue with a proximity sensor, my screen does not turn off during calls. When at the genius bar, it works fine, I get home and all of a sudden it doesn't work. SUPER FRUSTRATED, I bought an iphone 4 (black) 2 weeks ago, and since changing it to the white one, i've had this constant issue. Anybody else having this? So tired of going b ack and forth to the apple store! I've tried restoring, resetting, everything. Nothing helps. Help!

I am having the same issues with the sensor as well, I am guessing. It just started today. I have a white iphone 4 with a bumper and NO screen protector. While talking on the phone it just randomly turns on speakerphone and will start 3 way dialing someone in my contacts. I would turn the speakerphone off and a couple seconds later it would turn it back on. It has happened on multiple different calls today. VERY disappointing because this is my second iphone 4 since May. The issue with my old phone is that i could not connect to my wifi at home and when they tried to restore it at the apple store it gave them a hardware error so they gave me a new phone.

I NEVER had any major issues with my Iphone 3 and i regret upgrading to the 4. This is idiculous if I have to take it back to apple and they have to exchange it again!!

I had the same issue. The screen on my phone would not go to black during a phone call causing all sorts of issues (muting, punching random numbers, going to speaker, etc..) On the few times it would go to black, then it would not return my screen back to me at the end of the call. I would have to turn the phone off and then back on again before I could see my main screen.

It seemed like it was gradually getting worse until one day it finally stopped turning off altogether.

I have an Otter Box so I decided to clean the sensor hole at the top of the case, both sides of it, and lo and behold, it completely fixed my problem! Hope that may help someone else suffering through that frustration.

Found some Youtube videos regarding the proximity sensor on the white iphone 4.

It seems the best way is to remove the screen protector, without having to reset my iphone.

Had a look around into the screen protectors on the net and found ones selling on Amazon United Kingdom site with the proximity sensor cut-out.The protectors are front and back, not anti-glare but okay quality, 3 sets in a pack so it was very good for the price so tried it and it works fine.. Unfortunately it is not available in the US.

A lot of people uses the screen protector reason. All the white iphone 4 I've tested, DO NOT HAVE SCREEN PROTECTOR OR IN ANY CASE.

All have proximity sensor problem when using speakers to initial call and switching back to the phone.

Surprisingly, only white iPhone 4 are affected whether with screen protector or not. If you don't believe me, try it.

There definitely seems to be confusion as to what this problem and solution is. I think I have the answer. There are multiple issues that cause this. I just tested a few out on my white iPhone 4 and determined that the main culprit seems to be the speaker phone issue, as others in this thread described. However the issue also seems to be related to the Otter Box as well. As far as I can determine it is due to the case surface being raised a bit from the phone surface at the proximity sensor which does not trigger the sensor. My Speck case prior to this had. I issues since there was nothing covering the front of the phone. Many of you seem to be correct for different reasons.

I did the same thing and was getting ready to post how to fix it when I finally went to the this page and saw you had already posted the fix. I peeled the clear plastic off and then just trimmed the area around the sensor off and then put the plastic back on the case and it works fine also. Just wanted to let everyone with an otterbox case this definitely does work
