the connected display is not authorized to play protected movies

I have to say it's the most ridiculous thing that you can't use the hdmi output from the iPad (using apples own adapter) to play hd movies on a TV.

I have purchased the TV, the iPad, the adapter, and the movie, and yet still it's not allowed!!!

is there any way around this or any plan to fix it?

I have the same problem and I am pretty upset about this. I bought an IPad 2, and the hdmi cable and I can not view HD material on my (quite modern) Samsung LED TV...

Really?!?!

What is with this, I PAID itunes to get that episode of Dr Who, I want to LEGALLY watch it on my display and I can not... This is unsatisfactory

Yes it appears they have screwed us over once again. Yep some apple representative D¡ck has seen it and reported it so it now doesn't work. Really considering switching to the galaxy S4 when my contract runs out. Also having a problem putting music on an SD card for my car and DRM protection is screwing that up nicely for me. Apple **** me off big time.

I can not find a way to submit anything! So this I my solution and hopefully apple responds. I have many apple products and have had no problems. I bought a converter to play my movies from my ipad and it reports and error message. Ie will not allow me to play video do to apple restricting videos played to certain displays. So goodbye apple! I will not buy anymore of your products or anything you produce. Sorry apple but you lost a loyal consumer

I too must thank Joe 1504.

Just got Hugo free from apple store as one of their promotions. Pulled up on ipad, started movie to check it and then plugged into std hdmi tv without Apple TV. I use the apple approved cable/adapter. But when I turned on TV got "unauthorized " message. Read hundreds of posts on this subject but too techie for me. And most tended to recommend Apple TV .

Finally found Joe from 2012 on this thread who gave me a workable solution. Plug ipad into TV thru apple cable adapter. Bring up any ipad screen on TV. Then go to your movie and start. Worked perfectly.

It doesn't work....tried all of the solutions here on this board...THANKS by the way for sharing those.

But --- once again, they have put something into the iTunes videos to detect when you have it plugged into an external dislpay (TV). Started the movie on the iPad, then plugged it into the cable (HDMI into my Vizio).....plays for about 30 seconds...and then error. Oh well....NEVER buying a video from iTunes again. See I can buy the dvd or blue ray which comes with a digital copy and THEN I will be able to play on any of my TV's as long as they are HDMI compatible....Strange APPLE...very strange! Maybe they are not paying the companies enough when they purchse the resell rights in order to allow for full viewing enjoyment!

there is a bug in Apples detection, it fails me on the same equipment about 1 in 12 times (i do a monthly movie, and home use and get an issue about once a year with the monthly movie and just as rarely at home) the best solution is to use a different device (or do a total reboot of your devices a couple of times), i switch between pad/phone/laptop - i play movies that i purchase through itunes (whenever available) and license (for hundreds of dollars per movie) from the local distributor - this issue happens every few months and has nothing to do with my equipment ... before you run out and buy an apple tv is useless (especialy if you want to use it in a hotel room), first it needs to be networked before it will work, second it has the worst networking of any media device i have used, the first and second gen were great - but i bought the 3rd gen a couple of years back and all it is good for is streaming movies from apple, which chews up the bandwidth as it doesn't store - the apple tv will show to my various devices and most of the time (more than 9 times out of ten) it cant be connected too

the connected display is not authorized to play protected movies
