iTunes 10.2.2 is slow, freezes, won't run,...

For some reason, starting a few days ago iTunes 10.2.2 started getting slower and slower. It started randomly freezing and took multiple minutes to start up. It won't recognize my iPhone or iPad. I've tried reinstalling it completely multiple times. I've tried installing previous versions of the Apple Mobile Device Driver. I've tried installing previous versions of iTunes. Nothing works. I try to access the preferences and it takes a full minute to open the preferences panel. I click on podcasts and it freezes.

One thing I've noticed is that for some reason when I start up my system now (started a few days ago), my usb devices (mouse, keyboard,...) don't immediately get picked-up/turn on at the log-in screen. I have to wait about 20 seconds before they become ' active'. I have no idea what is causing this. Could it be related?

As far as I know all my drivers and Windows are up to date. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.

Thanks in advance for any solution.

I think it does have to do with the iTunesHelper or w/e other services run that are related. I noticed if you look at my previous post that WITHOUT iTunesHelper, starting iTunes WITH a iPod would instantly lock up itunes, couldn't close or literally do anything, HOWEVER, as soon as i unplugged iPod it would come back and be completely fine. So i started the iTunesHelper and iTunes was perfectly fine even with ipod in. No more lock ups and insane loading times. iTunes 10.2.2 is MUCH faster than 10.2.1.

Note: i also did remove every trace of apple software, then download the newest version so maybe the iTunesHelper.exe got replaced and the newer one is better?

PS. Now i noticed that when i play a CD or a group of songs, ITunes will stop playing after the like 2 of them. I can live with that, but i'm sure Apple is gonna send out an update......this is obviously a bad bug.

So tonight I completely removed everything apple from my PC (win 7 64bit.) I moved and backed up the entire itunes library. After a reboot I re installed itunes and let it build new library files. Upon completion of the install I clicked finish and booted up the clean itunes. it took 3 minutes to boot. When it came up it had no files. I added one 7 minute mv4 file (a loony tunes cartoon) which tool over 3 minutes to load in. When I went to run the file it took almost a full minute to start.

I'm putting my old library back together and going to sit and wait for an update from apple. I've decided to find out about returning the apple tv for now. maybe I will purchase it when they fix the problem.

BTW - tonight was with no devices attached, and no sharing activated.

This is why I sincerely think the pairing with the QuickTime installation is partially to blame. You're not relying on many components in your scenario, but QT is used heavily within iTunes as well as for playback. Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel and choose Apple Quicktime... select Change and then Repair. Try iTunes again and see if that helps?. Hopefully Apple is taking notice of this issue.

I had the same problem (Win 7 64 bit). With my ipod plugged in itunes would just freeze, then unfreeze as soon as I unplugged the ipod. What fixed it for me was to turn off photo sharing:

Advanced - Choose photos to share - (turn off). My photo library is over 7 Gigs - that seemed to have solved it. Now its zippy again and does not freeze upos startup.

Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately, it didnt help. My problem doesn't seem to be associated with syncing anything. It basically has to do with itunes running any command. Once itunes is up and running (which can take up to two minutes), I can flip through my entire library without issue. It is only when I give it any type of process that it locks up. The odd thing is it is actually getting worse. Songs now take close to 50 seconds to start playing when just a few days ago thewy only took about 30.

Everything else on my system is running fine. I am currently using my xbox 360 media center to run my media to my living room. I hate running it though the xbox because it runs so loud and hot but I just cant get apple TV to run accordingly.

I have no fix. The only thing I can think is that, like the photo sharing issue you had, something on my system is watching the same folders that itunes uses and is delaying the read write processes associated with using these files.

I will keep with it and try whatever I can. I am nearing the point where I may reset my system and start With a clean install of everything. Sadly I really don't have the 12 hours to sit down and do that.

iTunes won't let you import video DVDs because of copyright laws, not because of corporate meanness. However, you can do it yourself. The liability is yours. Use Hand brake (free) to rip the movie, then import the file into iTunes. Copyright law is murky about this, so think about it. Doing 700 DVDs will take up to 2,100 hours. If your time is worthy anything, repurchasing the video in digital form might be more cost effective.

I can confim, I too had the exact same issue, whenever I plugged in an IOS Device it froze up, and when not plugged in itunes worked fine.

I run Tune Up Utilities, and on checking the start up process, noticed itunesHelper was indeed disabled.

After turning it back on and restarting everything now works perfectly with no freezes whatsoever.

Thanks mrlhxc for pointing this out to me.
