An Anti-Virus is nothing compared to a little practicle knowledge. Of course, knowledge is less useful on "drive-by-downloads". Still, it helps a lot.

Nargg and harryb, safe browsing practices can't help all of the time. Malware is getting more and more malicious. All it takes sometimes is clicking a link that looks perfectly safe. Get your heads out of the sand and wake up to the realization that more and more malware/trojans are going to make their way to the Mac. They are going to get more malicious. Why does Apple release Security Updates? To patch holes in their operating system. No OS is 100% secure. The only one that comes very close is RIM's BlackBerry OS.

You and I are probably more knowledgeable than average Mac user so falling prey to virus on our Mac is less likely to occur. Reality is most Mac users are NOT egghead, tech people like us. I constantly tell customers that it makes good pratical sense to bring in your Mac for maintenance check every now and then. Most people use their Macs to do whatever it is they want to do. Foolishly or ignorantly they do not consider anything can go wrong and when something does occur they are ill-prepared to deal with it. I try to educate my customer's but if they don't heed my recommendation its' their problem. In theory I agree with what your saying but the average Mac or even PC user just not want to bother with backing up, running virus scans, doing maintenance or what have you. Owning a computer is not that different than owning a car. If you don't learn how your car works and do preventative maintenance your going to run into problems that will cost you time and money.

You hit it. I have been a Mac guy since the Mac and Mac Plus back to 1987 and know the mark fairly well, and this virii came in by clicking on the Drudge Report news site. There was no "clicking" on anything--it was instant as the Drudge page came up about half way. I know Matt and let him know and he posted a apology and an add for Apple and MacKeeper on his site. Now, anything these days can do it. I and another fella here at NASA fixed it quick, but its out there and for those that do not Verify Permissions and Repair Permissions at the root level of the HD are just asking for trouble at some point. Macs are good, but they are a computer and all computers can burp, period. Its not just MS crap. Good reply and post.
