How much to replace hard drive iMac 500GB

Ok so my hard drive keeps clicking, spinning the drive, then i get the spinning ball and a 30 second - 1 min wait, any playing music or video is paused and it does this intermittently through-out use. I highly suspect the hard drive is failing and it needs replacing, but what i really want to know is how much does it usually cost to have a hard drive replaced at a apple retail store. Anyone who as had their HDD replaced from Apple please let me know, how big the new drive was, and how much it cost for the repair.. just so i can get a rough idea.

Not to be nasty but please don't put "ring and ask" i'm asking here for a reason. 😝

Thanks

I know mac's are expensive. but really, if you can un-screw a screw, you can change a hard drive.

I'm going to do it with the pityful 320gb in my macbook pro, and here is how;

(1) Purchase a 1tb h/d

(2) Copy the h/d using clonezilla (free download, then burn to CD) and a 2.5" h/d caddy (£12... but I already have one)

(3) Unscrew the back off the macbook pro

(4) Prize off the obvious cable that is in the way

(5) switch the new for the old h/d that is in the macbook pro

(6) Attach the cable I took off

(7) Screw the case back together.

Aside from cloning the h/d, the actual h/d swap can be done in far less than 5 minutes!

Advantages:

Complete copy of all my data

Costs less than £100

Done in minutes

Disadvantages:

I've deprived Apple of over £100 of my money.

Swapping h/d's and adding memory is the stuff a 10 year old could do... I mean really, don't get so worked up, just do it! It's so simple, it's one of the few things Apple actually LET you do!
