Download the free program MPEG Streamclip version 1.9.3b5 beta from Squared 5 here:
http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
Copy the URL for the YouTube video. Then in the MPEG Streamclip menu choose File>Open URL. Paste the YouTube URL into the highlighted box and proceed from there.
The exported video from Streamclip can be imported to iMovie (I'm assuming you are using iMovie '11, '09 or '08).

Further to my advice above, it's best to open the YouTube file first in MPEG Streamclip (after pasting the URL check the Open option). Then choose File>Export to QuickTime. For compression choose Apple Intermediate Codec. Select an appropriate Frame Size then click on Make Movie. A Frame Size will be automatically selected, but you can change this if desired. You may need to fiddle with other options but try these settings first.
The Apple Intermediate Codec is iMovie's preferred editing format and will produce good results, depending of course on the quality of the source clips.

Thanks for the prompt reply John.
U have saved my day!
Thanks....🙂
As usual, you make a good point Karsten! It all looks a bit scary. I had a strong feeling that I shouldn't offer advice along these lines here, but had seen it posted previously, so thought why not. 😀
Actually, in case YT is watching, I've never downloaded (as in copied) YouTube videos, except my own videos for testing purposes - and I did use MPEG Streamclip to do that. It worked great! Actually, I tell a lie - my son-in-law (in a distant part of this vast country) posted a video for me which I copied with his permission, so hopefully I'm in the clear. 😉
Thanks Karsten, I fully understand your hesitancy, and appreciate you pointing this out.
Regards

My pleasure - glad it helped! Luckily I was in a rebellious mood when I posted that advice (just joking)

to make things clear:
when my son likes to watch a 'best of' Ronaldinho tricks made of videos from YT, I 'somehow' download too ...- 😉
maybe illegal, but legitimate - imho!
and giving advice on conversion .flv into an editable format is within the limits/ToU of this board.

sometimes, helping others could be on razor's edge ....- 😀
Thanks for clarifying that Karsten - much appreciated! I must admit to some hesitancy before providing the "advice". Luckily I haven't received any "blue" letters as yet! But, seriously, you are dead right - we all need to be careful about what we say here. Sometimes the simplest way to get information about this type of thing is to "Google", rather than use a forum.
