Does iTunes convert video

I added many videos to my library converted in the AppleTv friendly format. When trying to add a video to the iphone, an error says video not playable on iPhone (format issue). Does iTunes itself have the ability to re convert video to iPhone playable format? Or does conversion need to be done with 3rd party software? Im surprised iPhone can not play AppleTv video.

Yes if you click the desired movie/video then click on "Advanced" in the menu bar then is an option to "Create iPod or iPhone version". While this will work for your needs it is also comparatively slow and result in you having multiple copies of a movie in different formats. Alternatively you could download Handbrake (HandBrake) a free conversion tool. If you select the "Apple Universal" option it will work with all of your Apple devices without storing multiple copies of the file.

Thanks! You say handbrake does the apple universal? I converted video to the applyTv format because it looks good playing on a big screen using the appleTv device. I don't really want to have multiple copies of the same video and also, how to keep iphone separate from appletv video. Would be nice for itunes to add features to do this. Especially since apple devices, ipad/iphone/appletv/etc all use itunes but have their own specific video requirements. Itunes should know if you registered several types of apple devices to your itunes apple account, and when importing video, auto convert to all required device formats. Then when you plug in one device, only supported video for that device is displayed. Also a popup note that "video in other formats exists in the itunes library, but has not been converted. Do you want to convert? yes/no". Itunes then could convert in the background. And auto organize different video formatted items into their own folder in the library.

Well now Im wondering how itunes manages video. I notice when buying & downloading an HD movie from the tunes store, in the stored itunes video folder for that movie you see two files. One is the HD version and the other the SD (or iphone) version. But only one instance of the movie icon shows on the itunes movies list. That one movie icon represents both versions of the movie. And when you want to add that video to the iphone, itunes knows to copy the SD version.

I would like to manually do the same thing. That is have both an appleTV version and iphone version both in the same folder and represented by only one movie icon on the itunes movies list. Somehow itunes does this when both a HD version and SD version of the same movie exists. And only one movie icon on the list, not multiple icons for the two versions. I wonder what the trick is to creating this manually?

Hey (sorry about the delay between posts), here is a guide to doing what you are looking for. I Haven't done this before, but the guide looks simple enough to follow and will allow you to have both HD and SD versions just like the iTunes Store produces. Hope this helps:
