iMac 12,2 (mid 2011) airport (wireless) problem

I bought this week an iMac Mid 2011.

I have done every update from " software update", but i have an issue with the wireless connection.

Sometime the wi-fi connection freezes and internet doesn't work (ping with router fails). To solve I have to disconnect airport and re-connect.

The router wireless works (i have 4 pc + 2 mac + iphone, and i have this problem only with this iMac). In windows (bootcamp) wireless works fine.

Yesterday, when i opened Network Utility, opening the airport interface (en1) I had a kernel panic (this happened 2-3 times). So I reinstalled MacOsX.

Today I have the same issue with the wi-fi, but when i open network utility i have not kernel panic.

Someone has this problem?!

Solutions? Next week I'll call apple support to see if this is a known problem

You can call AppleCare today, they're open in the US on Saturdays however because you don't state where you're located I can't vouch for your country.

You can try some fundamentals such as repairing Disk Permissions in Disk Utility, resetting the SMC and resetting the PRAM.

It also could be a simple issue with the DNS settings your ISP is using. Macs can be sensitive to these, if you are not familiar with DNS setting please read MacWorlds DNS Troubleshooting article and then make the follow change:

1. System preferences

2. Network

3. Click Advanced

4. Click DNS tab

5. Click + sign

6. Add 208.67.222.222

7. Click + sign

8. Add 208.67.220.220

9. Click OK.

10. Exit System Preferences

11. Try out your iMac and report what happened.

I'm on WPA too so it can't be that.

I have noticed however that if I ping the router continously that my wireless connection stays up for much longer. I therefore have to leave open a terminal window doing this in order to use my IMAC

This doesn't solve the problem completely - I still get the wireless dropping occassionally but it does allow me to get a few hours of work before it happens and I don't seem to get repeated drops like I do if I'm just surfing the internet without constantly pinging the router.

Add me to the list of people impacted by this problem.

- I've tried just about everything including replacing the machine before finding this thread -- at least now I know i'm not alone...and now I know not to go out and buy new router or get my cable company to replace my modem.

I find that this disconnection happens when i am doing something other than browsing (ie watching a movie, in excel, ect). When I go back to browsing I lose connection and have to turn off and on airport. Very infrequently do i lose connection while browsing and never while downloading/ uploading.

There has to be solution to this----hopefully someone cracks this case soon----good luck to all.

Another follow-up...removing the password from my network worked for about 10 days. Then, all of a sudden, I had dropout after dropout. I then turned my 5 GHz n network into a g-only network. I also went back to password-protecting my network. After about a week, I have had no dropouts. I wonder if the culprit is networks running in 802.11n mode? It seems the best we can do is trial-and-error. In my case, it seems just when I think I've found a temporary workaround, the dropouts reappear. At this point, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that all will be fixed next month with Lion.

I agree that it only seems to happen to iMacs- in my case a 2007 model. However all iPads, iPods and my wife's MacBook are unaffected. Just to +1 to say I'm glad this thread is here because I though I was going crazy. This happened to me when I had to replace a failing UFO shaped AirPort and got a new Dual-Band AP Extreme 2 weeks ago. Now my iMac has to use a neighbor's wifi to get reliable internet.
