iMac 12,2 (mid 2011) airport (wireless) problem

I bought this week an iMac Mid 2011.

I have done every update from " software update", but i have an issue with the wireless connection.

Sometime the wi-fi connection freezes and internet doesn't work (ping with router fails). To solve I have to disconnect airport and re-connect.

The router wireless works (i have 4 pc + 2 mac + iphone, and i have this problem only with this iMac). In windows (bootcamp) wireless works fine.

Yesterday, when i opened Network Utility, opening the airport interface (en1) I had a kernel panic (this happened 2-3 times). So I reinstalled MacOsX.

Today I have the same issue with the wi-fi, but when i open network utility i have not kernel panic.

Someone has this problem?!

Solutions? Next week I'll call apple support to see if this is a known problem

You can call AppleCare today, they're open in the US on Saturdays however because you don't state where you're located I can't vouch for your country.

You can try some fundamentals such as repairing Disk Permissions in Disk Utility, resetting the SMC and resetting the PRAM.

It also could be a simple issue with the DNS settings your ISP is using. Macs can be sensitive to these, if you are not familiar with DNS setting please read MacWorlds DNS Troubleshooting article and then make the follow change:

1. System preferences

2. Network

3. Click Advanced

4. Click DNS tab

5. Click + sign

6. Add 208.67.222.222

7. Click + sign

8. Add 208.67.220.220

9. Click OK.

10. Exit System Preferences

11. Try out your iMac and report what happened.

Unfortunately I have a static ip with an ISP supplied router, I could probably change this the key type if I managed to find my router setup documentation, but Im not sure where they are. Ive got a feeling that this problem has nothing to do with routers or connection protocols/security and everything to do with dodgy drivers in snow leopard for the new wifi card.

How do we know apple is looking in to this?

Thanks for the update hardbase & sander81. Same problem with my Mid 2011 iMac.

Do let us know if we are able to provide any info to the top level. I'm just in a dilemma whether to go back to my reseller or to the service center as its such a work hinderance to lug the heavy thing out of the office after getting it all setup. Hope an easy software update would solve it soon.

I wouldn't be so quick to return it.

I'm 90% sure it's just a software problem, my airport card in my new iMac was doing the same thing.

I say was... I turned it off for a few days and just had it directly plugged in. Now going back to wifi it works as it should.

I'm thinking that having my wifi off for a few days flushed some corrupted setting/driver out of my system.

Not all iMac owners are having the problem, an like me.. Mine fixed itself. (I hope it's permanent)

When my AirPort connect dropped today it was a bit different than in the past. This time the display brightness was up to about 90% (I had it around 15%) and Sys Prefs > Network > AirPort showed yellow "on but not connected." I've never had the brightness jump like that before ... very strange.

The last time the AirPort connection froze, the status was green showing connected (but of course no network traffic would flow in our out).

I doubt there will be much more to report between now and when I take the iMac to the Apple Store on Saturday. I'll report back here as to the outcome. I'm hoping for good news ... I don't like the thought of having to return this beautiful machine for a full refund 😟
