Not sure I understand how this would make any difference since the same cable works fine on the original charger. It would seem to me that if the only difference between charging and not chargine is the power block itself that the issue lies with the power block. What am I missing here?

If you try something and it doesn't work, try something else.

There are only three things involved. iPad, power block, cable.

Chris CA: swapped cables and still no charging. The thing is that I know both cables are good, I know the charges is good and I know the iPod does take a charge and behave properly (showing the appropriate icons) when attached to power. It's got to be an incompatibility. And I even won't so far as to go down and buy the 12w charger that shows compatibility with the iPod classic. Same story there. The only thing I can think of is that being one of the very early 160gb classics its just too old to be included in the compatibility lists

It's USB so anything that charges via USB should work.

Sounds like the iPod is messed up.

Does it charge with anything?

It charges just great....with the cable from the USB port of my computer or the original charger. But the USB port is inconvenient when I'm traveling and I want to try to reduce the charger blocks to just one for my iPod, iPad and iPhone.

Went to the local Apple store this weekend (local to where I'm at presently) and we tried the new 12w charger, plus as many of the different, older chargers they had on hand. Nada. If we connect it to the small, iPhone charger, the iPod at least senses that the charger is there. Didn't leave it on long enough to know what it will do since that charger is designed specifically for the phone and is not indicated as being iPod compatible.It keeps coming down to the charger. The "genius" at the store tried to look up the specs for my ipod. They aren't available. I tried searching by model number. Nothing even comes up. The only only thing that the "genius" could offer is that the iPod is shutting off any charger that is offering more power than the iPod can handle.

Update/clarification. Apparently the current iPhone adapter is indicated as being compatible with the iPod classic; I just don't know if the one they had and tried at the store was the current version and/or compatible with the iPod classic.

I have exactly the same problem. My ipod classic charges from my ipad 2 charger but doesn't with my new iPad Air charger. Ipod classic and cable are in full working order. Haven't tried leaving it overnight to see if it charges without indicating on the screen.
