G5 dual 2.7GHz refuses to get past the grey apple logo screen no matter what I do!

Hoping that someone might be able to help, as I think I have tried pretty much everything and I’m running out of ideas now!

It’s a G5 dual 2.7GHz that refuses to get past the grey apple logo screen no matter what I do!

  • everything passes the extended apple hardware test (2.5)
  • 3GB of RAM (2x1GB brand new from crucial)
  • won’t start from a original OS 10.58 disk
  • passes disk utility when connected to another mac via FW target mode
  • nothing other than keyboard/monitor attached
  • all of this done; http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
  • tried alternative HDD’s without any joy
  • won’t safe boot
  • stays at the grey apple logo screen and the fans then start revving up excessively

Any other suggestions or advice very gratefully received! 😕

PowerMac, Mac OS X (10.5.8), G5 dual 2.7GHz

Checked the CD/DVD cables and all OK. When I unplugged it over night and stated it in the morning, I managed to download iStat and check temps and all seemed OK, just that after a little while it freezes up. I even manage to get it started from the DVD if I leave it unplugged over night with the DVD in and then start from the DVD in the morning?

Any more suggestions?

Those G5 Powermacs especially the liquid cooled ones all seem to have the same malady over and over again. If it is not the leakage problem, then it is either the lead free solder issue at the ram slots or most likely the power supply, Yes, the power supply. I fixed two of them. The first one, was stalling at the grey apple logo and would not boot up from anything, the install CD, the internal HD and ext, HD as well as DiskWarrior. It would just hang at the grey apple and the fans would go wild. I took a hair dryer and heated the area around the ram slots and slightly to the right of them where you see a square with lots of solder activity. That area chip ( back of the MoBo ) is soldered by a system of ball array that can unsolder certain contacts by heat/cool/heat cycling over time. I kind of reflowed the solder and the Mac is as new. The other Mac had the exact startup malady and it was a power supply replacement. The Mac would start up to the grey screen, but for some reason it needed extra power to get things rolling with the gear spinning thing, It is as if the PS at that point after the grey screen needed to pump out more juice to fire it up. At times it would start up but only for a few seconds or minutes until the grey screen of death shows up and asks for a force shutdown. Both Macs are running fine but check for ang signs or leakage under the processors and on top of the PS. That sort of leakage was really a defect in those models and in some cases were replaced free by Apple.

G5 dual 2.7GHz refuses to get past the grey apple logo screen no matter what I do!
