match preview page numbers to pdf page numbers

the page numbers in preview at the top of the window dont match the page numbers in the pdf. this creates a number of problesm for me. my question is whether there is any way to make them match, eg by editing the preview page numbers. thank you .

macbook pro 2009, Mac OS X (10.6.4)

I combined two PDF documents and arranged the pages in the order that I wanted. The PDF file had the pages mislabeled. To fix, I "printed" the document to a new PDF file rather than save it and the resulting PDF file had the proper page numbers.
