Can't update iPhone 3GS to 4.3.3

iTunes prompts me to download and update my iPhone, I choose to do so. When it's completed downloading and stuff, it says that my iPhone isn't eligible for the requested build.

This seems odd, I've had this problem before and I fixed it by updating iTunes, this time iTunes is already up to date.

Also, if it truly isn't eligible then it shouldn't prompt me to update it. The device compatibility list in the update info thingy says that the iPhone 3GS is compatible.

Suggestions?

There is another reason: You ever used the same computer to jailbreak an iPhone, which I did for a friend of mine a while ago.

Because of the change in the host file, I even had the problem with a brand new iPad2 and a perfectly legitimate iPhone 3GS.

Thanks for the solution. I managed to update both the iPad and the iPhone by adding the # at the right place.

You can only upgrade to the latest version, not to any previous version. If you are trying to upgrade to 4.3.3 and you get the message it means that the phone has been jailbroken either currently or at some time in the past, or it had a pre-release version on it and the baseband firmware is out of sync with the iOS release. I am not aware of any solution at this time, but Google may be able to help.

I wouldn't recommend anyone updating to iOS 4.3.3, unless you want to have problems with not only your battery life, but problems accessing the internet within apps! Stay to 4.3.1 if possible. I am now having a multitude of issues because of the latest release, and nothing seems to fix it. I'm going into the Apple store today!

I'm sure you have a multitude of issues, but it is not due to the release. There are messages almost identical to yours, except that the release number cited for the problems is different, starting with 2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.2.1, 3.0, 3.1, 3.1.2, 3.1,3, etc. The changes in 4.3.3 are so insignificant that they could not cause any new issues; all the release does is stop the backup of the location tracking file and flush it more frequently. If everyone actually believed messages like yours we would all still be on release 2.0.

What HAS happened is something when wrong in the release update process, and if you take a few minutes to search the forum you will find how to fix it.

I've the same error when trying to upgrade to 4.3.3 on my ipad 2 but editing the hosts file doesn't work and the device was never hacked."device not eligible for build request" Please help!!! I have iTunes 10.4 and tiny umbrella (5.001.) doesn't work cause of some java issue "no compatible java 1.5 available".I'm open to try anything within reason right about mow.

Your post is contradictory. You say the device was never hacked, but you used TinyUmbrella, which hacks the phone. Go look at your hosts file again. If there are any lines that contain the word "apple" this is your problem. Note also that you cannot upgrade to 4.3.3, because the latest version is 4.3.5, and you cannot install a down rev version.
