Sound issues on iPhone 3GS

Speakers on iPhone seem to be broken - I can't hear anyone talking to me on the phone but they can hear me. I also tried plugging in my speakers and trying to play some music but that didn't work either which says to me it's not the speaker that's broken but something to do with how it operates. I'm sorry, I know nothing about computers etc so I can't really be more clear than that. It's an iPhone 3GS and I think it's running 4.3.1 at the moment, I can't quite remember, sorry! Any idea what might have gone wrong and what can I do to fix it?

I have the same issue, I have lost the audio on the ringer, the headset, and speakers, no sound at all.

It happened after the recent 4.3.1 upgrade, although not sure if they are linked.

Had a replacement phone in December due to a reception fault on my original 3GS, I have been advised by O2 the replacement phones only have a 3 month warranty on them 😟

I have taken the reaplcement phone to my O2 provider and been quoted over £180 to repair as it is just over 1 month out of the initial warranty, and the 3 month repair warranty.

Currently it looks like my only option is to pay the money.

Currently paying over £40pm for no service from O2, and unable to use any of my apps or facilities on the device.

I hope you have better look and its a simple fix in your case.

Hello again,

having panicked, posted here, looked around Google for ideas, emailed my mother, and panicked some more, I eventually decided to update my software. Now running 4.3.3 and just tried calling my mother again to test it out and worked absolutely fine 🙂. I'm very sorry to hear all the trouble you've been having - have you tried restoring your phone (presumably you have, I don't want to teach you to suck eggs, and I know nothing about these kinds of things...!) - if by any chance you haven't, it's definitely worth a shot. Hope you get your phone sorted soon.

Thanks, yes I have tried all the basic steps, reseting the device, upgrading, restoring from backup etc .. including the headphone jack removing headphones several times. Sometimes after a reset the audio comes back but then stops after the iphone is reset.

I will try the 4.3.3 upgrade as you suggest and cross everything.

Good news!

I sent the device off for repair, and got quoted £135 by O2. I refused.

I then reset everything and upgraded to 4.3.3 as the post above suggested above and all is working correctly again.
