I got a pop-up telling me to click on MacKeeper 911 to "clean my computer". I don't know anything about MacKeeper...is this legit or is it a scam / virus?

It's a scam. Find it using /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app and be rid of it.

Not that it did anything malicious, just messed with everything.

Hi BDAqua are you referring to Growl or Mackeeper? If Growl - and HP installer installed with its printer driver what are the issues with removing it, if any. Did you use the Growl uninstall. Any information is welcome, I read the Growl page but not sure whether to believe what is there. Thanks

After MacKeeper I have become extremely nervous about intrusive software, espacially stuff that installs itself without asking on the back of other programs you are installing.

You can totally believe everything you read on the Growl site and they have the most responsive support forum I have ever seen. No profit motive, just dedicated coders trying to do good stuff for the Mac community.

Thanks for the information. I have posted in the HP printer forum to ask the situation if Growl is installed or uninstalled, I am waiting to see the response.

Undernormal circumstances I wouldn't have given it a second thought, but after all the trouble with MacKeeper I have become extremely cautious.

If Growl is installed there will be an icon for it in System Preferences.

MadMacs0 was quoting a reply to a post about Growl by Csound1, not MacKeeper, when he said that. The discussion went briefly OT from MacKeeper to Growl. At this point, it's very difficult to imagine anyone who's been paying the least bit of attention to these discussions who would say that about MacKeeper. In fact, in the same post he even links to an article describing the problems with MacKeeper. MadMacs0 has been involved with this since early on.

Sorry about the mix up earlier.

Well here's how it appears to be: Growl is a great app, but I heard it's going to be shareware soon. It's very responsible.

Actually, it's only available via the AppStore for Lion at I believe $1.99 since v1.3 a month or so ago. You can still downloaded older versions for Mac OS X 10.3-10.6 from the web site, but they won't be updated.

Agree that it's a great app.
