I got a pop-up telling me to click on MacKeeper 911 to "clean my computer". I don't know anything about MacKeeper...is this legit or is it a scam / virus?

It's a scam. Find it using /Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app and be rid of it.

After a quite period, after completely cleaning out all sources of potential cookies on my system I found the return of the Zeobit cookie in my cookies list yesterday; as before this cookie is extremely vicious, as no matter how many times you delete it regeneration occurs immediately. Having not visited Zeobit site thsi is interesting as well as disturbing. The MacKeeper adverts have started to appear in visited webpages again; it seems liek there is another push to sell this naucious peice of software.

The Zeobit people never got back to me on this formum, nore met my challenge to fully disclose how to remove all their programs undesirable elements taht may be lurking on my computer.

It was not a good idea to install MacKeeper as the endless issues taht have ensued for the last 4 months.

Thank you eww. Yes, I have been through all these processes. There are currently no files show as MacKeeper or Zeobit on my computer.

I had success to eliminate, or subdue, the Zeobit cookie for a few months, but now it is back again, without visiting the Zeobit site.

I had quite a battle with Zeobit and representatives on thsi forum, but they declined my challenge to disclose the locations and names of all files that would be on the HD from MacKeeper and Zeobit.

You have visited some web site whose owner has the bad judgment to host Zeobit's advertising, and you are now suffering the consequences. If you use Safari as your web browser, clear its history and empty its cache, or reset it altogether (which deletes all cookies). Make sure "Block Pop-up Windows" is checked in the Safari menu, and download and install GlimmerBlocker:

Hi eww. Yes, I thought that was one potential cause; but Zeobit's advertising seems everywhere.

I have been through all the stages you mentioned many times, it seems to work on a very temporary basis before returning Zeobit cookies show up.

Also Local documents on your computer shows in the cookie list in Safari - I also want to delete or get rid of this too.

I believe the issue is evercookies taht are somewhere on my HD.

Hi WZZZ, well this is more of a continuation, rather than repetition. I have basically gone through everything other than a full reinstall over the last few months. Also I have been through in the past, and also revisted, all the previous and new advice. I have just run the script of arstechnica and still having issues.

I am still getting the listing for 'Local documents on your computer' shown in the cookie list in Safari.

There must be something regenerating these cookies somewhere on the HD, the most disturbing is how the Zeobit on keeps showing up.

MacKeeper is still universally reviled. Even if it weren't marketed so obnoxiously and so difficult to get rid of, it would still be charging money for functions that can easily be accomplished for free, many of them completely unnecessary or even counterproductive to begin with. MacKeeper is the very definition of an opportunistic scam. Don't give it another thought.
