AppleTV 16 Bit Setting

The latest 4.2.2 software update for the ATV2 features a 16 bit audio setting.

However I was under the assumption that the digital ports on the AppleTV were always outputting sound at 16 bit / 48 kHz.

Can someone explain the difference in this new setting and the standard Auto? Have we finally gotten true 16 bit / 44.1 kHz sound output?

My guess (and it's only a guess) is that the setting was added to avoid playback incompatibilities with TVs that do not support 24-bit audio processing. (I.e., some Apple apps have the ability to set output audio resolution to 24-bits for increase fidelity and this 16-bit setting forces the output to be downsampled, limiting output to only 16-bit audio.)
