Hi can i stream from an imac either directly or using apple tv to the sony bdv e370 .im thinking of buying the system any help would be appreciated
i have a lot on films from itunes i would like to hear on 5.1 does it work well with apple tv or do i stream another way

Connect the optical audio out from the ATV to the optical audio in on the Sony BDV-E370 and you'll be good to go.
Thanks Michael will that transfer video and 5.1 sound to the bdv e 370 i,m a bit of a newbie with surround sound.
That will only transfer audio.
That Sony system does not have pass-through video so you need to connect the HDMI output from the ATV to your TV. The Sony system has an HDMI out for the DVD/Blu-ray player. That needs to be connected to your TV for viewing DVDs or Blu-rays. You'll need 2 HDMI inputs on your TV; one for the ATV and one for the Sony system.
Ah got it so the sound goes through the sony sytem and the picture goes as normal
switch the tv on, play apple tv movie, as long as the sound is going through the amp and its turned on i should get surround sound

I have the same issue but with a slightly different Sony Home Theatre System (BDV E870) and wondered if you, or anyone else, could point me in the direction of where the optical in / out slot is located on the Sony Blu Ray player, as it isn't that obvious to me upon initial review!

Have you tried using Serviio?
I use it on an iMac and play movies on a Sony TV or through a BDV-E370. Only pre-requisite is that your tv or bluray player are on the same network your mac is on.
Optical Audio jack is on the back of the BDV-E870.
Check the Sony manual.
