Apple TV 2 is stuck on the "setting calendar/date"-screen forever. Please help!

My Apple TV 2 will not start, whatever I do. It's stuck on a screen which says "setting calendar/clock/date" (or something like that), and never gets past it. I've been waiting for it to fix itself for about two hours - so waiting wont fix it. Resetting it by pulling the plug does *not* work - neither does resetting it via the Apple Remote.

Please help me, I seriously need the Apple TV!

AppleTV 2, iOS 4.2, I don't know the exact iOS version.

It sounds like you haven't got a proper connection to the Internet or that your router is blocking access to certain ports which are needed to set the time.

But whether it is or nor, I still can't connect the Apple TV to my Mac via Micro USB. At least iTunes doesn't detect it. Any way to fix that?

Okay, it might be. I will try to do that.

What ports was I going to forward?

TCP 123

TCP 3689

TCP 80

TCP 443

TCP 53

UDP 5353

Did I get them right? If not, can someone please write them in a list, like above, so I can more easily see which port is which?

You don't want to be forwarding any ports, just make sure you're router allows traffic over these posts and in particular TCP 123 which is used for communication with the time server.

I find it peculiar that two independent networks would both have this port closed, but maybe, who knows. I also think that the fact you can't get it to communicate with iTunes is notable, I still think I'd be taking it to the store.

No ports with any of those numbers are blocked, so I guess that means they're alright.

Still doesn't work though, I'll be taking it to the store during the coming week - but I really can't see them helping me.

Yes, so the first link is the exact same as the one I published earlier in this same thread. And it doesn't solve my problem. I will try the last link.

if you follow the instructions word for word then it will work.

i've done it myself so i know the instructions are correct.

NO IT DOES NOT WORK.

yes it does.

if it's not working for you then either your appletv is faulty or you are not following it 100%.

having done it myself i know it DOES WORK.

I'm sorry. I have tried at least 20 times now, and please stop saying that it works - cause it doesn't. Okay?

The fact that my Apple TV isn't working, is - if you haven't paid attention to this thread - the whole problem. Please don't try to sit thousands of miles away from me, without knowing anything, and try to say that I am doing something in a two-step instructions manual wrong. It is seriously insulting me.

If you can't help me, please don't write anything. Thank you for trying, but once again; it doesn't work.

you're living up to your, poorly chosen, username i see.

"knowsbest" appears to be your attitude here.

you've been given all the info you need in this thread already.

if you are not able (or willing) to follow it then there is nothing anyone can do to help you.

we are all just users here, and are using our own time to try and assist other people. when people like you throw it back in the face then one wonders why they even bother.

so far you've called the people working on your "local" store ignorant and arrogent. as is often said, it takes one to know one.

Yes, those ports are correct. I'm not sure why I had to all of a sudden start doing port fowarding, but once I did, everything started working like it did before. I have been to the mac store and they gave me a new ATV2 and brought it home and it still had the same problems. So I called up apple again. and we went through and narrowed it down. I had to do some port forwarding. And how you do that depends on what kind of router you have. The router is what blocks certain things from coming through. I had my router set on a medium firewall, which blocked data that the ATV2 needed to link to the apple server. This may not be the problem in all cases, but this worked for me. If you ned some help with port forwarding, email me at mits_stud_577@hotmail.com. Don't forget to mention your router make and model. and if possible what year it was manufactured. Good Luck

I had the same problem.

When I turned the AppleTV on it just said "setting date / time" but never got pass this.

I tried plugging into iTunes but it wouldn't recognise the AppleTV.

I was on the verge of giving up & going to my local Apple Store for help.

Then I started looking at possible reset options via the remote.

I found this link to un-pair the remote; http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1555

i.e. hold Menu + Left button for 6 seconds.

The remote unpaired & for a reason I do not know the Apple TV sprang to life.

I could then set up the wireless network again, do a softwear update & bobs your uncle a broken AppleTV is working as good as before.

Thought I'd post this incase some other un-lucky sole comes across this post & it helps them.

Thanks.
