OverDrive WMA Audiobook and iTunes?

Hey, I just joined this library audiobook service. http://nwwanytime.lib.overdrive.com/3C976B44-8233-4FB1-BF03-31B0FF85F967/10/504/ en/Help-QuickStartGuide.htm The books come in various formats including MP3, trouble is it seems every one in which I might be interested is marked "OverDrive WMA Audiobook." It says they play on iPod but I don't see how, since I know regular WMA format is completely incompatible with iTunes, and if I can't get material into iTunes I don't see how to get it onto my iPod. I joined NetLibrary through my local library and more than half the titles were completely useless being in WMA, including most of those I most wanted. Someone here gave me the name of some program which converts WMA to MP3 but I haven't had time to mess with it yet. Thing is, NetLibrary is free through my local library, so I can mess with those books anytime, but if Washington Library Anytime has something NetLibrary doesn't, is it worth my time trying to download titles in OverDrive WMA Audiobook? Because I had to pay to join this other library and the card expires at a certain time. If it's going to expend gallons of blood, sweat, toil, and tears to get the books to play, I'll have to give them the go-by, but if it's not too much of a struggle I wouldn't want to miss titles I could have otherwise obtained if I knew what was involved. Is this some kind of special WMA or are they just misinformed or lying? Is there something special I should do to make it work, or should I just give those books up as a bad job and concentrate on what I can actually make work? Thanks.

I just got an iphone 4S and have had a few frustrations.

I've solved a lot of problems, including the audiobook one through copy and paste instead of sync.

In Itunes create a new playlist on the device with the Audiobook title. Copy and paste all of the audiobook files into the playlist.

Go to Music, playlists and there it is.

Hope this helps.

I haven't even gotten to the point where I can try to transfer my WMA Overdrive title to my iphone/ipad using the Media Console. After downloading my checked-out title and selecting open with Overdrive Media Console I get a message saying "this version of Overdrive Media Console does not support media in the WMA Audiobook format".

I can't even get my title listed in the OMC to attempt transferring (it seems like no one else is having trouble with this step...), what am I doing wrong?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Overdrive WMA Audiobooks transferring to iTunes SOLVED!!!

I recently purchased an iPhone 4S and installed the overdrive app. I have a PC that has the Overdrive Media Console installled. I downloaded songs into the Console from my local library account and then transferred them into iTunes. While iTunes coverted any WMA files and placed them under Books instead of Music. The problem was that after I dragged the files over to my iPhone, I couldn't figure out how to play them on the iPhone, because they didn't appear in the Overdrive app. When the phone was connected to the PC, I could see the titles listed under books in iTunes, but couldn't access them on the individual phone. I finally tried right-clicking on the iPhone icon, while I had the phone plugged into my PC, and chose "create playlist" from the short-cut menu. . I created a playlist with the name of the book as the title, dragged the titles onto the playlist link (NOT THE MUSIC OR BOOKS SECTION) and low and behold, I open iTunes music on the phone, and click the Playlists button, and there are my Overdrive WMA audiobook titles. Hope this helps!

This has worked for me using a PC to get WMA formatted Audiobooks to my iPad and iPhone when using Overdrive.

First, download the Overdrive Media Console software to your PC. You will find this software download link on the left side of the Overdrive page, or there will be a link across from your audiobook icon that will direct you to the site to download the correct software.

Then download the audiobook to your desktop, via the Overdrive Media Console software. Test it to make sure it plays on your PC.

Then transfer to iTunes. If you begin to transfer the audiobook and it does not recognize iTunes as a place to transfer the book, you may need to open iTunes in another window and then it should show iTunes as a transfer option. Choose that and let it transfer to iTunes.

After the audiobook has completely transfered to iTunes, sync your iPod, iPhone, or iPad to iTunes.

You will find the book listed in your playlists of your music or audio icon, not in the Overdrive listing.

I have not tried this method via a mac computer but seems like it should work, although some of my co-workers say that although they were able to get the WMA format audiobook to play on the Mac computer via the Overdrive media console software, they could not get it transfered to their device. I have not tested this and suspect that either iTunes was not opened and not recognized as an option by Overdrive Media Console, or they did not know where to find the file on their device after they sync because if you just check the Overdrive icon, you will not find it........

Hope this helps!

I was having the SAME problem.

I can't even open WMA files with Overdrive. After 20 mins of trying to figure out why, here's what I learned:

OverDrive WMA and WMV files are not supported by the Mac Operating System

Unfortunately, the Mac operating system does not natively support DRM-protected WMA files. The Mac version of OverDrive Media Console (OMC) is only compatible with MP3 audiobooks.

WMA titles marked as compatible with transfer to an Apple device (such as an iPod or iPhone) must be downloaded using a Windows PC first. Once downloaded on a Windows computer, they can be transferred to an Apple device.

LAME! LAME!! LAME!!!

I spoke with both Apple and Overdrive Support. With the latest update to iTunes, WMA books are not compatible and Overdrive's programmers are still figuring out how to work with the new iTunes. HOWEVER, I did find a way to work around it.

The key is to convert the protected WMA files into MP3. There is a free software that will do it: http://download.cnet.com/Power-MP3-WMA-Converter/3000-2140_4-10113420.html

Once you've downloaded the whatever conversion program you choose, locate the media files that were downloaded from Overdrive onto your computer. For me, they were in Documents\My Media\WMA Audiobooks. Select all the audio files in the converter program and have them sent to a new folder (it's easiest to locate if you leave it on your desktop).

Now you should have your entire audio book saved as MP3s into a folder on your desktop. Go to iTunes, import the folder and create a playlist. Copy it onto your device. Voila!
