MBP 1st Gen. Only One Fan

Hi,

I have recently installed iStat Pro vigget on my MBP 1st Generation to monitor its temperature. Of the two fans only one is reported as running. Is there any utilities on the macine itself that can verify this for me? Is it normal for only one fan to be running maybe until it needs to?

Thanks.

Per eww's post, it looks like the motor, which makes your life easier.

"Any idea where I can order the fan from?

That's more easily handed if we have a rough idea where you are. My bookmarks for part vendors are mostly for US vendors.

Here's a place in San Francisco that show the "parts + labor" charge for replaceing the right-hand fan:

Not cheap, but I suspect the labor is the big hitter.

Here's a place in Alabama that has both fans as parts (listing is for the 15" pre-Unibody):

http://www.powerbookmedic.com/MacBook-Pro-Fan-Assembly-Right-15-p-16981.html

Check the site yourself because parts for a 15" can be different from those for a 17"

Well, that's a start!

Hi Farzad,

I realize this post is from well over a year ago...but did you ever replace your fan? Did it work?

My story (if you're interested): Someone recently gave me a MacBookPro 1,1. It was getting a gray screen at start up with the flashing question mark. I assumed the hard drive was bad and put a new hard drive in it. That didn't work... but when I connected the original hard drive to the MBP externally, it recognized it and worked fine. So I was then thinking that the ribbon cable to the internal HD must be dead and I can replace it for about $40. However, in checking out the other Stats, I noticed under the diagnostics this error:

4MOT/1/40000002: Left_Middle-Front

I can also find a fairly inexpensive replacement fan. My hope is that the fan went dead, which over-heated the ribbon cable to the HD. However, I'm nervous to spend money on a new ribbon cable and fan, only to find out that the damage is really on the logic board?? Since I can fire it up and everything else besides the HD is working great, I think it would be a fun project... but would love to hear that it is just the fan that needs to be replaced when you get the error above. Most of the posts in this forum were from people still under warranty and their answer was to send it into Apple... so who knows what Apple replaced?

Thanks for any insight!

Yes, I did replace both the fans while I was under the hood. The only problem I encountered was the removal of the left fan. There is a very tiny cable with even a tinier attachment to the main board that came off and I couldn't even see how it attaches with a magnifying glass. I finally closed my eyes and relied on my touch senses to push the connector back in. It was a wire that was on top of the fan and came off as I tried to remove the fan.

The new left fan eventually started making noises and I was sorry I had replaced it since only the right fan was bad. I could have replaced the noisy new fan with the original fan but I didn't want to deal with that wire again.

There are these gadgets that can tell you if the fans are working or not. I don't know what it is called now since I am typing this message using my new MBP!

Sorry I can't be of much help in your case since it looks like it is more complicated. Hopefully an expert can give you some ideas.

Good luck.

If it helps any at this late date... I've been researching "fan issues" with my A1150 simply because it was running hotter than I could stand with it sitting on my lap.

One thing I do recall seeing is that "Fan Control", despite having obvious readouts for two different fans, actually has both fans running (in sync) and showing their values as the single readout for the left fan.

I put the A1150 through a few runs of YouTube videos, with the keyboard lifted up so I could see if/which fans were running, and sure enough... both were running even though Fan Control said only the left was.

If that helps...

Chip,

Yes, this was a pretty old message but it is good you added your two cents. No telling when someone else is going to need the information.

I did change the fan(s) and the computer did work more cool, and most recently I bought a new MBP.

Thanks for the input. You never know what software you can trust. My computer was just hot.
