error 1004

Can this be any more frustrating? I have done EVERYTHING that has been suggested by Apple's site and those on discussion groups. Apple will not give any specific answers unless you pay for the support. $400 for an IPOD and you must PAY for support. Anyway, I am all of a sudden not able to update apps nor purchase from ITUNES(all of my credit card info is up to date and accurate). I have restored , uninstalled, re-installed etc and nothing has changed.

The error I am receiving is 1004. I have even allowed ports 80 and 443 to get thru firewall(as suggested on Apple's site). Still does not work.

The only thing different about the last time I was able to update apps and purchase was prior to installing IE8. I have had NO problems with IE8 and every other program in my computer works fine. I doubt very much IE8 has anything to do with this 1004 error. I have noticed that there are literally scores of others that are experiencing the same exact problem. But, since I purchased this IPOD for around $400(with tax), I really do not want to PAY for support.

So, I am asking..does ANYONE have a fix for this error? I mean one that someone has tried and works.

Sincerely,

Melissa

That was about the only thing I didn't try. Well, I tried it and no change. But, thank you for the suggestion. If Apple/Itunes is seeing these posts(I hpe they are), I can no longer update nor make any purchases from Itunes. I know I am only one person, but, the more and more people that have this error and are not able to make any new purchases, maybe this will be the incentive to help us out without trying to charge us for the help. If you know the answer for those, like me, who have exhaused most of the suggestions to get rid of this ridiculous error 1004, come up with a direct and clear explanation of how to fix this. Again, I have tried to update/purchase from other computers that are authorized for my Itunes account. NONE work. That tells me that there is a problem NOT with people's computers or their settings, but, rather with the software that IS installed on the Ipod.

I have gone in circles with all of the links that Apple and Itunes have provided and have come up with no solution. Would it be that difficult for Apple and Itunes to provide a clear and precise answer to resolve this problem once and for all.

Thanks to all that have made suggestions. And again, from all of the reading I have done on the internet, there are hundreds if not thousands of IPOD users that are having the same problems updating and purchasing thru Itunes.

Thanks,

Melissa

From the article cited at the end of my post:

Error 1004 and 1013: This error may be the result of the connection to gs.apple.com being blocked, redirected, or interrupted. Adjust your hosts file or security software to ensure that connections to gs.apple.com are not blocked. If the issue persists, try restoring on another computer with a known-good connection. If this restore is successful, you will need to contact whoever supports your install of the operating system and security software installed on your computer for assistance. If your hosts file redirects requests to gs.apple.com, you may choose to follow Can't connect to the iTunes Store, in the "The 'hosts' file may be blocking the iTunes Store" section.

Thank you. I have looked at most of the documentation on the Apple support site. The one thing the site does not explain is how to edit the host file to add the gs.apple.com. Most users, like me, have seen what to do, but, there is no explanation as to how. We have tried udating on 2 other computers and the error 1004 still exists. So, I can rule out the computer operating system is at fault. We have even tried going to a Starbucks free WI-FI location and the same error occured.

So, would you please tell me how to get to the hosts file and explain how and where to insert the gs.apple.com and in which format. I have Windows Vista Premium.

Again, thank you so much for replying.

Hi. I am receving this error when updating apps on my IPOD Touch. From what you are saying, I think, is that you can update apps on the PC and then sync them back to the IPOD? I was always able to use just the IPOD alone to this. And yes, I cannot purchase from ITUNES from my IPOD. I have not tried updating or purchasing directly from the PC as I did not need to before.

As you probably have seen on discussion, many suggest changing the host file to make sure that gs.apple.com is not blocked. But, no one explains HOW to do that. Do you, by chance, know how to do this?

The frustrating thing with Apple Support is that their answers are generic with no real directions on HOW.

Thank you for replying.

I was able to find instructions on properly editing the 'hosts' file. I added:

itunes.apple.com

ax.itunes.apple.com

albert.apple.com

gs.apple.com

All of the above were with the latest Ip addresses that I could find. After doing the above, there was absolutely no change. Then I removed them and added each one one by one. I added one then saved the file and then tried updating..Still receiver error 1004. I did this for each one individually and even tried them in pairs. Nothing made a difference. Why is it that Apple cannot just give the information to its users and be done with it. Because of this error I am not only not able to update apps, but, also cannot purchase anything. If this happens to scores of people and all of a sudden people cannot make any purchases, perhaps Apple and Itunes will once and for all provide the fix in clear and not ambiguous detail. It is a shame that IPOD and ITUNES users need to go through this hassle.

Thaks again,

Melissa

Yes, very frustrating. I have researched so much. Done almost everything that people in forums have suggested. I also made sure that the IPOD Helper was active. I ran diagnostics from ITUNES help. All tests were passed. Someone mentioned RECBOOT. But, according to what I read, RECBOOT will not work on my system because it is a 64-bit system..whatever that means. I am still hoping that someone knows the answer and posts a solution. Until then, I will not be able to update any of my apps nor purchase anything from ITUNES. It would be nice if someone from APPLE/ITUNES would see these posts and discussions and chime in. But, so far, nothing.

Good luck to you.

Hey....I started having this same problem 2 days ago and couldn't figure out why...googled it, etc. And while I was reading this post had an idea...I've been messing with the date and time on my phone...changing it to dates in the future..so when I tried to update apps or get new ones it would be 200pm May 20, 2011 but my phone would say 200 pm July 12, 2011 for example....so I went I changed the setting to set automatically and BAM...it all started working! I don't know if it will work for you but it's worth a shot! Good luck!

UPDATE!!! Well, the changing of date and time(as I mentioned before) made no difference. Still received error 1004. HOWEVER, I decided to try changing from 12 hour clock to the 24 hour clock. Then I was able to update one app. So, I decided to try another update. Error 1004. So I changed it back from 24 to 12 hour clock. Guess what? I was able to update an app(only 1). Then I tried another...error 1004. I repeated this process of back and forth a couple more times. I was able to update one app and then error 1004 on the next and so on. What is the deal with this? This is NOT something an Ipod user should have to do. It is not only ludicrous but indicates that this is definitely something Apple and Itunes MUST look into. There have so many bug in software before and at one point a previous Ipod the speakers stopped working. Fortunately, I was able to return the thing back to the retailer who was kind enough to exchange it for me. Then, of course, I needed to reinstall everything once again on the new Ipod.

I hope that others try this 12 to 24 clock routine and see if that helps them. But, more importantly I hope Apple and Itunes will once and for all figure this out and tell us. The Ipod is supposed to be fun and entertaining...not work. I work all day and really do not want a second job of always needing to figure out what is wrong with my Ipod and Itunes.

Sorry to go on and on, but, this has been and still is a very frustrating and time consuming process. The error 1004 solution still is not resolved, but, for me, at least, there is a work around..or should I say..an time consuming process to be able to update one purchased app at a time. I still have not tried to purchase anything since this work around, but, at this point, I feel that until Apple and Itunes comes up with a fix, I do not want to take a chance on losing money or my time.

thanks for reading,

Melissa

Well, the joy of being able to update apps has ended. The going back and forth from 12 to 24 hour clock does not work anymore. Sorry. I was hoping that this may be a work-around. Back to error 1004 AGAIN!. I guess I was being optimistic, but, with the history of the many problems I have had with the ITUNES/APPLE software updates over the years, I should have known better.

So, I ask again. Does anyone know of a permanent fix? Apple...Itunes .. Do you want to chime in? Is this error 1004 something that will never go away?

Anyway, sorry if I got anyone's hopes up that there was a work-around. I will just use the IPOD for accessing the internet and checking emails and playing the un-updatable apps that I have. I will not however, be able to purchase anything else until Apple and Itunes get involved in the fix for these 1004 errors.

I have tried getting in contact with Apple and Itunes, but, with all of the references to solutions that don't work, I doubt contacting them will resolve this matter. I am just hoping that if enough people are as disappointed with the lack of a fix for 1004 errors that Apple and Itunes will once and for all have their software writers look deep into this problem and issue a patch.

Hi again. Sorry about all of these posts, but, still no fix for error 1004. The only thing for those with error 1004 when updating apps/purchasing from ITUNES via the IPOD, is to do it online in ITUNES(lower right hand corner with the update tab). I was hoping to be able to do this from my IPOD directly as you are supposed to be able, but, for now when I am at home, will just do my updates from the computer and then sync them to my IPOD.

I am hoping for level 2 support form Apple( I think they call it an exception). But, in the meantime, the computer is the only way to avoid error 1004.

If I hear of a fix for the IPOD directly, I will post.

Thanks for all of the input.
