No Internet connection after unlocking/waking iPad 2

Whenever I wake my iPad 2 from sleep and unlock it, it tells me it's connected to the Wi-Fi network but there is no Internet connection whatsoever.

In order to restore the connection I have to turn Wi-Fi off and back on.

I am running iOS 4.3.3.

I bet if you check in Settings/Wi-Fi, then tap the arrow to the right of the name of your network, that the IP is 169...

If so then your router seems reluctant to give your iPad a connection. I would try resetting both. If you can, reset your router to its factory settings (you may need to look in the user manual to learn how.)

For the iPad, press & hold the Power and Home buttons together for 10+ seconds, ignoring the red power-off slider, until you see the Apple logo.

Not at all.

My router is working perfectly and the iPad is connected to it with an appropriate Internal IP (192.168.1.38)

Whenever the iPad has been sleeping for a long time (during the night for example), the next morning when I turn it on, it says it's connected to the Wi-Fi network, and it certainly is because I can see it in the Wi-Fi settings, but whenever I want to use the Internet I can't. I have to shut down Wi-Fi and turn it on again and then it works.

Either way I did reset both my iPad and my router and the problem persists.

Have you got another solution? Is this a common occurrence? Does Apple know about this problem already?

Thanks for the help

I just did this (for the second time) and still no internet connection. This is very frustrating. I've only had my iPad for a couple of weeks and this just started up over the weekend. Prior to that, no problem. I was using it at a different location last night (in a hospital on their wi-fi) with no problem. Just dealing with this at home. I have a wireless PC that I'm am using right now with no problem whatsoever. I would love help with this.😕

Dorothy,

Open the control panel of your router through the i pad or computer browser. Look for a setting called Qos, stands for quality of service. If it is on, turn it off. Also, look for another control in the same area the looks like some sort of power saving setting for the router. I read a thread last night that said some routers put themselves to sleep as respects a specific device, and that the signal the pad sends when it wakes up does not do the job. If you can find that setting, turn it off.

Don't know if this will help, but it makes sense. If it works, please post back, along with the brand of router you have for others to learn.

I don't think I can do that. I have AT&T 2WIRE router and can't make changes to it. Going to contact both Apple and AT&T in the morning I guess. Interesting thing is I was easily able to use the iPad while elsewhere today again. No problem whatsoever. Just when I got home. But thanks to two previous people for your input - that's nice!😀 Surprising that Apple tech support is only from 6:00am to 6:00pm Pacific time. The real world is at it well after 6pm!!

Judging by the amount of threads about this issue, it would seem to be a somewhat common issue. I have tons of wifi devices in this house, and the iPad2 is the only one with major issues.

It started after I had had the device a week or two. I eventually tweaked my router setup to stop auto-switching channels. That fixed it for a while, then it started up again. My next attempt was to configure my DHCP to reserve an IP for the iPad. That again fixed it for a while before it started messing up again. My current band-aid is to have the iPad set to a static IP. Remains to be seen for how long that will trick it into working..

Apple doesn't seem to be in the habit of acknowledging issues unless they get major media attention, so I wouldn't hold my breath in that regard. Hopefully they'll still fix it in a patch though.

To be honest, so far no setting has solved the issue. It's just made the iPad happy for a short while before having to bring it back in line in some other way. The last two times I've noticed it happening after the iPad has been out and about, connected to other networks than my home one. Not to mention I did recently upgrade router (to get gigabit LAN ports), and the issue persisted across that switch.

Regardless, having to modify router settings on a weekly basis to bring one device, the iPad, back in line is somehow the router's fault? When half a dozen other devices are just fine regardless of router settings? I disagree quite strongly. There's not a shred of doubt in my (former network engineer) mind that the iPad is at fault.

My MacBook Pro has no problems with the router, even after sleeping for hours. As soon as it wakes up it connects. My sister's Windows-based laptop connects without any problem to the network as well. My BlackBerry connects to the network too.

Why is it that the iPad is the only device that when awakened from sleep fails to establish a connection to the Internet? Especially considering how the iPad does say in its options that it is connected to the network, and even shows me its assigned internal IP (which I reserved especially for it in the routers options, to no avail). So it's connected to the working Wi-Fi network (or so it says), it has an assigned IP, but it has no Internet access?

How is this the router's fault?

I agree but yet have no problems when I used the iPad at another location. It must be the combination of the two -iPad and my router. I called Apple yesterday and was told to reset it to the factory settings. I don't have anything stored on there other than some new apps that I would need to download again. So for me, resetting won't be an issue, but if it happens again, I'll have to call Apple again. I already KNOW that AT&T is not going to be especially helpful in this situation when everything else in the house is working fine. Seems to me that there are TOO many people with same issue and we should not have to muck around with routers, etc., to get this EXPENSIVE toy to work properly. Urggghhh!
