**** sites keep popping up and then I am directed to purchase Mac Protector in order to clean up my computer. Is this a scam? HELP please!

That is not a Virus, it is a Trojan Horse that YOU authorized and installed, however inadvertently.
I have been reading all the threads so have a better feel for it now. So if I didn't buy the Mac Protector then I haven't actually downloaded it right?!?! I appreciate your help 🙂
If you didn't buy just means you haven't fallen victim to giving financial and personal data.
Some versions can download without user intervention or action.
If the package file mounts or launches and you give Apple Installer permission then of course you know you installed it.
There are tips above on how to find and delete and look for it.

No, that's not right. If strange sites are popping up, then you have downloaded it and you have installed it. Follow the instructions to remove it.
I just removed this from my mother-in-laws machine. I find it interesting that Apple refuses to acknowledge publicly, the existence of this malware. I say this as I searched apple.com for references to this malware and could find NOTHING... I like my Mac(s) but find it irresponsible of Apple to tell their support folks to not remove the virus (per my mother-in-law). They did refer her to a site with instructions but the instructions were intimidating to her (she's over 70 and not very tech saavy). Ignoring a problem will not make it go away....
