How to transfer files and folders between iPad 2 and GoFlex drive?

I am considering purchasing the Seagate GoFlex drive. I would like to transfer files and folders between the drive and the iPad 2. I would like to also play movies, songs and books on the iPad which are stored on the drive. Any apps needed? What steps should be taken to meet my objectives?

If I am understanding the GoFlex Satellite correctly (and its not released for sale yet), it streams media to your iPad though its own wireless network. It is not designed to function as the typical external hard drive, and you can't upload files to the GoFlex Satellite from your iPad--you are always "feeding" it content from your computer, then viewing that content on your iPad.

I would like to also play movies, songs and books on the iPad which are stored on the drive.

That you can do with the Satellite.

I would like to transfer files and folders between the drive and the iPad 2.

This you can't do with the Satellite, AFAIK.

I am also interested in finding out how to move files from the iPad 2 to the GoFlex.

Nor can you do this with the Satellite, again, AFAIK.

For transferring files to and from the iPad, I believe you're left with the old standbys: sync via iTunes, or put on DropBox or MobileMe (depending on the particular iPad app; some sync to DropBox and MobileMe, some to one or the other).

Yeah, I had high hopes for it too, but it isn't really what I'm looking for in terms of a workflow.

Another option (after stumbling into the thread, https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2420358?answerId=12138524022#12138524022):

Use the Photo Transfer app to transfer photos wirelessly to and from your iPad to your computer. (Both must be on the same wireless network, of course). I just tried it out and it's pretty straightforward and is a nice option for quickly getting photos onto your computer rather than going through MobileMe or emailing.

Thanks for the reminder about AirStash, which I also intend to check out. It looks like a great way to make content available on the iPad.

The challenge that remains for me to work out is to develop a sensible work flow to get content (not just photos, but documents) generated on my iPad off of my iPad. That's one reason why I favor apps that work with DropBox, as it is a simple way to keep content accessible. Scrivener, for, example, which is a research and writing app that I use on my laptop, will let me edit and sync any project documents I select, so that they go from my laptop to my iPad and back to the project on my laptop.

I have recently heard about PhotoSync. This sounds very similar to Photo Transfer App. Would either of these work with the GoFlex drive to get photos from the iPad to the drive? Maybe this should be a question for Seagate.

There are so many ways to go. I wish that there were a clearly defined workflow white paper. Maybe the release of iOS 5 will move the iPad along to simplify these transfer needs.

Elizabeth,

I wrote to Seagate and got the following response:

"I understand that you'd like to know if there are apps available to move data between your i-devices and the GoFlex Satellite.

These are indeed available and are used to move the data between the devices.

Without having the device and the GoFlex Media app I am unsure of whether or not files can be moved to and from the GoFlex Satellite to and from the iPad.

What I specificlly want to be able to do is load a large number of folders of high res images into the GoFlex Satellite and then at some later time when I have no access to my MacBook Pro load certain of these folders into the iPad. I also want to be able to load images from my camera to my iPad (know how to do this) and then load these folders of images to the GoFlex so that after my trip with just the GoFlex and iPad is over these folders can be moved to the laptop.

I probably should ask Seagate if what I want in the above paragraph is possible. Do you think it is?

I'm so new to the iPad that some days I'm not sure of anything! But, given that documents on the iPad are "owned" by applications and the IOS doesn't have a Finder-type function, I'm skeptical about using the GoFlex to work with files without a computer. I understand I'd be able to view images, for example, but would I be able to "open in" an iPad photo editing app? And I'm also skeptical about having external storage that can upload/download to the iPad without either a computer or cloud storage like DropBox or MobileMe. But I'll be eagerly watching to see what develops.

Getting the files from the sat goflex went well, but they don't show up on the ipad the way they are organized on the goflex. On the macbook, the documents are organized into folders so we can search more efficiently for what we need. It does not transfer from the goflex to the ipad that way. Each doc just appears in a huge long list. Does this mean we need to organize the whole thing again on the goflex? Or is there an app that we can use? Anybody getting this?
