1080p->576i

Hi guys. I have an XDCAM EX 1080p FCP project (shot on EX1R 1080p) and I need to create a 576i PAL SD DVD from it. How to properly perform required downconversion? Should I set "interlaced" in MPEG-2 Encoder pane in Compressor, or I can use "same as source/progressive" setting all the way during encoding and smart DSP make fields from "p" source during building?

Thank you.

Two steps.

First, "Send To" Compressor, set up for convertion to DV-PAL. 4:3 or Anamorphic will be your choice. This is because Compressor does a great job at converting from NTSC to PAL and back. FCP isn't so good at it in comparison.

Second, "Chain" a new job in that batch. Here's how:

1- Highlight the DV-PAL target you set up, the go to Job > New Job With Target Output.

2- You'll see a new Job in your Batch, but the Source will look like chain links. This means the DV-PAL encoding Job output will do directly into this new Job. Choose one of the DVD preset folders for that one.

Sorry, forgot to specify: the footage was shot with "PAL Area" setting within the camera - 1080 25p - so, there is no need to convert NTSC to PAL. BenB, could you please clarify: why I should convert my project to DV-PAL first? It is necessary only for convert NTSC to PAL (in case of NTSC source footage) or this step is required to make interlaced DV-PAL for further correct authoring?

I mean - if I already have PAL HD 1080 25p - can I just "Send to" Compressor and choose appropriate DVD preset at once?

Thank you.

Yeah...I'm confused too. Why would you compress to DV first, then compress again to DVD? Just compress ONCE.

Export a QT movie...reference movie (uncheck SELF CONTAINED). Take that into Compressor. Then choose the DVD BEST QUALITY setting that closest matches your tiiming. If under 90 min, choose that. If between 90 and 120...choose that. Then render.

Take the result into DVD Studio Pro and author the DVD.
