Hey,

I took it in for a repair. It was indeed a hardware problem for my MBP.

Fortunately it was on the last day of my warranty. However, the apple support told me that they could give me some extra days, there would be no problem if I took it in 4-5 days after the warranty expiration.

They replaced the whole screen, 3 working days in total.

On the paper I received there was no indication about the money that it would have cost me if there was no warranty.

I have a Macbook early 2008 model which does not recognise my iSight camera, I have reset the SMC, PRAM and I have even gone as far as replacing the iSight camera and the cable and microphone. I have however got a dual boot with windows 7 on this mac, could this be the problem I wonder? It does not recognise the iSight under the system profile in the USB section!

Anyone else have any help in determining what is wrong with my iSight camera.....HELP! Thank you!!

No. Not simply the dual boot with windows 7. Your iSight should work with dual boot. The fact that your iSight is not recognized in your System Profiler's USB Device Tree indicates that yours is likely a hardware problem.

If your built-in iSight camera is still not behaving correctly after trying all the steps in How to Troubleshoot iSight, contact Apple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider for service. Apple Technicians have access to all the necessary special tools, test equipment, technical data, and replacement parts required to find and correct any problem of whatever underlying cause as quickly and efficiently as humanly possible.

Alternatively, an external Mac Compatible Web Camera might cost less. Because it is possible that no camera will work with your MacBook until it is repaired, be sure to test the camera you want to buy on YOUR MacBook to be sure it works before you buy.

Thank you for your reply, I did contact Apple and they stated that it may be a hardware issue so I replaced the iSight camera and the cables....still no luck. I am wondering would it be an issue with the logic board but the iSight camera cable joins the display cable and is connected to the logic board with the one connection. So as I have replaced the iSight (hardware) and the iSight/Display cables (hardware) I don't know where the fault lies... This is so frustrating! I wonder has anyone faced the same situation.

You're most welcome!

Without the special tools, test equipment, and technical data available to Apple Technicians, you will continue to wonder. The easiest way to KNOW is haveApple or an Apple-Authorized Service Provider look at your MacBook. After they have checked it out, they can tell you what will be required. Based on their input, you can decide whether you want them to fix your problem while they have it.

Alternatively, you can continue the hugely expensive process of replacing hardware components until you find out what fixes your particular problem.

With so many MacBooks in service, I seems likely that someone has faced the same symptoms you are encountering.

However, the underlying fault that causes a different user's problem may be different from yours. Therefore, it seems to me that any response of what worked for someone else would be merely another suggestion of the next hardware component replacement you can try.

Unless you have the time and money necessary to continue replacing individual components, I suggest you seek professional help.

Alternatively, Xmas is coming...

I know this is one major headache! I know Xmas is coming! I wanted to fix the iSight before I sell it on and get myself a 13inch Macbook Air :-) The problem is that there are no Apple stores in Ireland, just an AASP, which no doubt will charge a small fortune to fault find.

Do you think the dual boot has anything to do with it? I never use the Windows 7 anyway so I'm probably going to delete the partition.

Thanks again for your help.

You're welcome, David.

If you still don't want to contact the AASP, you can try Apple's Online Support.

If you want to continue replacing parts until you find the component that causes your problem, hopefully your parts source will have everything you need. If not, the best source I know on my side of the Atlantic is Mac Parts - iFixit.

davidod2012 wrote:... Do you think the dual boot has anything to do with it?....

No I don't.

However, if you have not already tried it, you could minimize the possibility of software or your Windows partition being your problem by backing up your important information, repartitioning and securely erasing your MacBook's disk, and then reinstalling the origninal Mac OS that came with your MacBook. Now test your camera before updatingor adding anything else.

If your Apple camera apps do not work in a clean install of OS X, your trouble is bigger than software.

If your camera work does wth the bare OS X install, you can update the OS X and test again.

If the camera is still working, you can add needed apps one at a time and test again between each addition. If success continues, the final step is to restore your saved data.

I have three macs, one where the iSight Camera hardly ever worked. I was driven nuts for a long time by this, being told it was a hardware issue. But I use my macs heavily in the field, let them them run down, so didnt bother to take it in.

After I upgraded to Mountan lion, it began to work again, and has since. So in my case, it was a software issue that affected that one machine

Good luck

Hi davidod2012,

Just a bit of left field thinking.

On my iMac i5 the USB device tree looks like this

User uploaded file

Obviously not all Macs have the same layout but I am wondering if it is a USB controller that has failed and possibly other devices or ports that are using the same Controller are also absent as it were.

On my MacBook Pro vers 1,1 (Core Duo) the iSight camera, as it is called then, is a version 1.89 and is linked on it's controller to a USB port that has an external Drive connected to that.

That then brings up the issue of Unpowered devices ...
