if you go to the root folder on your PC drive (ie music-itunes lib-iTunes media-books) you will find your purchased books by author, you can delete them from there, then iTunes, then iPad. they will not show up again until you redownload them (pretty much forever) but they are no longer stored locally
It sounds as if joanfromoshkosh does not want them to show up under iBooks > Store > Purchases.

You can just delete them from iTunes and they will get deleted everywhere else. They will still show up as having been purchased in iBooks > Store > Purchases.
actually just tried it by deleting file from root folder, purchased and purchased on...in iTunes, rebooted PC and iTunes and purchases did not show back up until i went in a redownloaded
so if the OP just wants the purchases to not appear they could do that
I believe that list is something that the store keeps, much like a purchase history on Amazon or cancelled checks that a bank may keep. The list is being made available to you as an account holder in case you want to review the transaction history.
Yes and it allows you to redownload them also.
I understand that some people want to re-read books; however, after being the victim of a "prank" where many inappropriate free books were downloaded to my phone, I do not appreciate the constant reminder of these in the purchases history on my phone. I have deleted ibooks several times from my phone, but the purchase history still shows these books after I reinstalled the app (even while selecting the Don't Sync Everything option). I don't want to have to start a completely new appleID account, because there are books that I did pay for that I WOULD like to keep. I just don't want to risk exposing my young children to the exploits of a former friend. Any helpful advice for this problem would be appreciated.
Try contacting iTunes support and let them know you would like to create a new account, have certain books credited to the new account from the old account and have the old account closed. They should be able to tell you if that can be done and whether your currently downloaded purchase can be updated to the new account or if you need to delete and redownload them. This will allow Apple to create an audit trail and you to have an account that you are okay with.
Couple of things wrong here.
First of all, I don't want to contact iTunes and open a new account.
Secondly, someone made reference to going to the "root" folder. I'm sorry, I know not of what you speak. I am a little bit of a newbe at this and need some things spelled out for me more specifically.
Thankfully everyone is trying to help, but I still have the problem.
"Secondly, someone made reference to going to the "root" folder."
Taipan62 was suggesting to remove it from your hard drive but you can simply do this by deleting it in iTunes.
It will still not be removed from your purchased list.
It will simply not be in iTunes/iPad.
You can still download it again.
The purchase history is a function of your iTunes account and has nothing to do with whats on or not currently on your computer or iPad. You can't delete it. You might try contacting Apple for a solution, but couldn't say if it is something they can help you with.
Not sure what the"problem" actually is - or why this is such a big deal - but if you don't want to see that list, don't go to purchases in any of the related apps.
From the iBooks FAQs http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4059:
"Do parental controls apply to books?
No, the book publishing industry does not offer a ratings system which can be used to limit access to books based on their content. However, you can prevent children from downloading the iBooks application by turning off access to the App Store."
Unlike most everything else that one can download through the Apple Stores, books do not have an appropriateness ratings system in place so Restrictions through the Settings app are currently not available. Even if a previously downloaded offensive book is removed from a user's library, a minor can still navigate back to the Store and press the Purchases icon and possibly download the item again. There does not seem to be a way to disable access to that list without disabling the entire app so users with minors cannot use the app as they may wish.
Logging out the Stores through the Settings apps turns off access to the Purchase History. I think you can still read your books and even browse the Stores. Log back in when you want to purchase something new.
Just my 2 cents worth. it seems to me after a while one could have quite a few books
under the Books tab in itunes. and you should have a way to delete the ones you no
longer want or need. let them just show up like all the deleted apps do. and if you
want it back re download it. Apple lets you delete podcasts from itunes. why not
any books you don't won't.

Have't you read any of this thread?
As noted (over 5 months ago), you can easily delete books from iTunes on your computer and/or or your iDevice.
Yes I have read it. But a straight simple answer might help
everyone has a different way. as far as I can tell and I'm
no expert it's easier to delete a song or a podcast
than a book.
