Snow Leopard sudden self logout (once a day...)

Hello there!

Any one else faced this issue:

you work on macbook pro, then go away to have a glass of water, and when you're back your laptop is waiting for you to ask to choose user & log in??

Thre is no settings of security to force log out after the idle time.

It seems not to have any particular reason to cause sudden closing of all applications & logging out. It can happen in any time and at any number of programs run.

I seldom use anything except Chrome, Itunes, Pages, VLC, Quicktime, Preview. Very common apps.

Any ideas of what is it??

Hopefully waiting for your reply. Console messages below.

Anyone ever find a fix for, or even manage to localize, this problem? I'm also running a late 2007 MBP 3,1 - console logs very similar to others in this thread. Have tried many possible fixes - no luck so far. Interestingly, without my changing anything, the problem is worsening lately - the machine reboots at least every other day, sometimes every day.

Any advice is appreciated - thanks.

I know this is an old thread, but:

I'm also having this problem with similar console logs: Windowsserver crash

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)

Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000000

Crashed Thread: 0 Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread

I'm also on a late 2007 MBP 3,1. Snow Leopard 10.6.8. It started occurring about 2 or 3 months ago, I think it has to do with flash, and it has only happened when I have been using chrome.. the latest chrome (18) still gives me this.. usually when accessing youtube or netflix. It will go to a light blue screen and then log me out.

Paoto -- I'd been meaning to post a reponse to my own question, thanks for reminding me.

I don't know if it will be any help to you, but I took the approach of (over several weeks) systematically disabling/removing different behaviors on my system (nearly the same as yours I think) until the situation improved -- I use VMWare Fusion a great deal, and the last thing I changed was to disable the 3D graphics acceleration on all my Windows VMs.

It's now been nearly a month without a reboot. I think I've also modified my use of Expose/Spaces (I'm more likely now to switch spaces using cmd-tab, rather than with the hot-corner technique I used to favor) -- but other than that, I don't believe I've changed anything else since things improved.

If interested, I posted a short writeup here: http://bit.ly/H07H0w

Hi there! Just turned 3D acceleration on VM as @grendl described above. Will check the issue for some period of time and then make a report here.

Another question often related with sudden logout:

chome (Version 19.0.1084.53) used to make some tabs tolally black untill you separate desired tab to separate window. The issue doesn't depend on the number of tabs (I've seen this with 2 tabs only when the third becomes back, and sometimes 15 tabs seems to work correct).

Any Ideas on this?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Stas,

I'd be very interested in knowing if disabling the 3D acceleration makes any difference for you.

After months of no problems, a few weeks ago I suddenly started to get the sudden logouts again -- at first I had no idea why the problem would reappear, then realized that I'd recently begun using an old VM in which I had not turned the acceleration off -- I did so and the problem seems to have disappeared again.

Hi there!

No miracle. Unfortunately. Everything seems to be all right after VM 3d acceleration vacation (turned it totally off), but today I had blue screen again while trying to open in-browser video to full screen.

Any further ideas??

Realy appreciate all usefull tactics one had discovered during this ****** cat-and-mouse with OS!

Thanks.

I was having this issue (see my post), however I never played with VM 3d acceleration settings. I would randomly have logouts, but then recently would have problems booting my laptop. It turned out that my RAM had gone bad (confirmed with memtest). After I removed the faulty stick I have yet to have this logout /windowserver crash problem again. It might be worth running memtest in single user mode on your device.

Hi there, brave mac bugs investigators! My new thoughts on the self logout issue. For about 2 months ago I stopped using Chrome as primary browser, and switched to FireFox. So I haven't launch Chrome for this period of time (only a couple of times to find my old bookmarks etc.). All the other running processes on my mac are as usual: at least 2 browsers, pages, numbers, VM for win apps, iTunes, adwords editor, Evernote... So plently of them. No reboot, and.... (drums please!) no self logout issue!

Not a single time. This was a big problem to switch form Chrome, now I'm starting to think about it again. Maybe this is because I'd already forgot about the annoying blue screen...

Any thoughts on how to clean the Chrome through to give it another chance?

Thanks!

Hi Stas - I thought I would share this experience with you. I was plagued with this problem on 10.6.8 using a MBP 3,1. I got a hold of a MBP 4,1 and, using Migration Assistant, migrated everything from the 3,1 unit - third party apps included, everything.

Since doing the migration I have not had any sudden blue-screen logouts on the 4,1 machine . It seems to me that if the software is identical on both machines, including third party apps like Chrome, then it may be some hardware/firmware difference between the machines that causes the issue to occur on the 3,1 MBPs but not the 4,1 MBPs. My guess:

- Apple probably knows about this issue

- The issue most frequently occurs on 3,1 machines

- there probably isn't an 'easy' fix to this and/or there may not be 'enough' 3,1 machines out there to justify a fix.

It would be interesting to see if there is anyone out there that has seen this problem on a 4,1 machine. In my case, on my old 3,1 machine, it was almost always clicking to full screen while playing a movie in VLC or Quicktime that would trigger the logout.

My old machine (sudden logouts 2-3 times a week):
