Until recently, it was possible to drag an item from "Places" on the Finder window sidebar onto the desktop to delete it. That function no longer works, so how do I delete places from the sidebar?

though there is no "puff of smoke" action any more 😟

They made a change in 10.6.7 so you now have to hold CMD as you drag it off. Then it will go puffff in smoke.
